Despite the statute's lofty goals, FirstNet is still not truly interoperable. This is Congress' opportunity to fix that, says @haroldfeld.bsky.social in his latest blog post:

Congress created FirstNet in the wake of 9/11 to launch a universal broadband network for first responders — but the work remains unfinished.

Everyone knows NTIA's "Condition 50" is anti-net neutrality. Turns out it will also cost CA billions in benefits they already have, preempt CA's "no throttling public safety" law, and give Trump a choke chain on CA tech policy. It's a deal only Trump could love! Will CA fall for it?

California is being asked to sacrifice up to $16 billion in broadband benefits it already has – in exchange for a $1.42 billion BEAD grant that the Trump administration can revoke whenever it likes.

When the phones wouldn't work here in DC on 9/11 (overwhelmed, I expect), it occurred to me this was exactly the kind of situation email was designed for. I was able to let my folks know I was OK, coordinate with my wife in Shady Grove, and get my son from daycare.
