The number of people doing science opportunistically is great. In 2010, these people p-hacked. In 2026, they do crap preregistrations. Just like we figured out ways to prevent p-hacking, we are finding ways to prevent opportunistic preregistration. The solution is always the same: transparancy.

A good time to remind people that 1) not all deviations from a preregistration are equally problematic for the severity of a test, and 2) if you need to deviate, deviate. The validity of the test trumps its severity. online.ucpress.edu/collabra/art...

Anyway, I really feel like the whole environment, including the state of the published literature, is really colluding against students learning how to do proper research. That’s a shame; I always have the impression our students really do want to learn how to do things the right way.

Second, beyond career implications, doing open science & especially replications often comes with immense emotional burden & affects mental health. Ongoing harsh criticism, suspicion, & hostility, from senior scholars with immense power in the field, isn't something people normally want or look for.
