Can we just stop it with these textbook names. What kinds of messages are these sending to the students? Am I missing something?

But it's real. Students bring a ton of anxiety around statistics and the math behind it into the courses. And our training infrastructure sucks. This paper is a really nice overview of the challenges we face in statistics education. www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1...

I just think the entire conversation is inside out. Do other sciences spend so much time catering to the anxieties of aspiring scientists? Isn't it just a default expectation that you have to engage with the mathematics of physics, chemistry, engineering? Why should psychology be different?

I don't think the initial suggestion was that students don't fear stats. She was suggesting that it sends an unfortunate message, and perhaps a self-fulfilling one, to use such titles.

Yes I totally agree and do a lot to try to address these things. I talk a lot about how if probabilistic thinking was intuitive we wouldn’t have to teach it. But I don’t think titling books in this way (conforming their anxiety) does much to help
