Astra GPT6 was playing Minecraft on livestream. A “creeper” came and blew up its chest of valuables. The model then spent “the next several hours doing essentially nothing but farming potatoes,” telling itself: “ALWAYS CARRY CRITICALITEMS withkeepInventory; don'tstoreinunguardedchesteveragain.”

GPT-6 Astra had gotten further than any Al system had ever gone in Minecraft.
It was able to set up a semi-automatic blaze farm, allowing it to collect 6 blaze rods. It then located a warped forest, where it killed 6+ endermen and collected 3 pearls. As thousands of viewers watched the stream, Astra put all of its valuable items in a chest. Then a creeper showed up and blew up both the chest and Astra's bed, wiping out all of its progress. Astra seemed to get extremely frustrated after this happened. Astra said to itself,
"ALWAYS CARRY CRITICALITEMS withkeepInventory; don'tstoreinunguardedchesteveragain."Vals Al @ValsAI

The model appeared defeated, spending the next several hours doing essentially nothing but farming potatoes. Stream viewers noticed and complained that Astra needed to "pick up the pace." Astra also seemed to become paranoid about creepers:
"GREEN tall thing ahead was
SUGARCANE, NOT creeper!" At times it was hard on itself: "you can screw up and drop things"; "do NOT waste another night chasing dark pink pixels" (its own disparaging wording for pigs); "our last tool stupidly ended Slabsselected/ rightUP and 15sec thinking killed us".

"The crisis in arts education is not just a story of falling enrolment, but widening inequality." 🗣️ CFTA Director today in @thestage.co.uk on how the figures on exam entries hide a more serious injustice. We all need the arts in our lives. www.thestage.co.uk/news/student...
Screenshot of an article in The Stage with Headline: Students in deprived areas three times less likely to take GCSE drama and an image of a group of teenage drama students sit on a studio floor, smiling and listening attentively to an instructor.Continuation of screenshot of the same article in The Stage, reading: Responding to the new data, Jack Gamble, director of the Campaign for the Arts, said: "The crisis in arts education is not just a story of falling enrolment, but widening inequality. Every child should have opportunities to discover and develop an interest in the arts, whatever their background and whatever their postcode.

He added: “That’s why we have welcomed the government’s pledge to ‘revitalise arts education’ in England’s state-funded secondary schools and why we’re urging ministers to deliver on that pledge with the necessary policy changes, teaching staff and schools funding."

The Labour government has pledged to “revitalise arts education” following the recent independent Curriculum and Assessment Review, with promises to abolish the EBacc – which is widely traced back to being detrimental to entry numbers in arts subjects – and to reform the education measurement tool Progress 8.

long read, from yesterday: dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...
screenshot of the title/byline for the piece:

DISSENT Magazine
What's Left of The New School?

Leadership at the iconic progressive university has declared war on its own workforce, fired tenured professors, and shuttered whole departments. But what's happening to the school is an increasingly common story across all of higher education.

[By] Jeremy Varon – August 27, 2026screenshot of a paragraph from the linked essay:

"The opportunity costs [of universities privileging fiscal austerity and stockpiling over taking any risks vis-a-vis pushing back against authoritarianism] are enormous. The New School spent a whole year figuring out how to fire its own faculty, tying up activist energies on campus. During that time, it made no statement nor sponsored any dialogue about how the institution might meet the current authoritarian threat. Instead, it took a page from DOGE, echoing the power grabs, pettiness, and disdain for workers that are part of that threat. At best, it confused the question of whether the New School has any role to play in the defense of democracy. At worst, it walked away from its own legacy. Few recent times have been darker than these. May those still committed to the best of the New School turn its light back on."
