Recurring critiques of old-guard celebrity advocates (Fonda, Bono, Hollywood Dems) were expertise gaps, hypocrisy, audience capture, and the advocate becoming the story. Influencers often repeat the same pattern.

Audience capture is stronger now. Old Hollywood still faced a mass audience that included skeptics. Influencers live in tighter, higher-engagement bubbles and get punished faster for deviation.

Self-promotion is structural. A cause that doesn’t generate clips, merch, or growth gets deprioritized. Fonda’s arrests were publicity by design. Many creators treat politics as another content vertical.

Been playing vice city in preparation for GTA 6 and I keep thinking about how so much of what I associate with the 80’s came from this game. I was born in 1990. I watched films from the 80’s, but GTA is just so densely packed with pop culture references that it often stands at the forefront.

I have this coworker right now, I find him emotionally interesting. He’s the complete opposite to my temperament, dude runs hot. He’s always mildly irritated about something. Customers walk in and he already has a monologue about why they’re awful, or weird or annoying. There’s a nihilism there.

Watching people personify and then ascribe a bunch of negative traits to a machine that is functionally incapable of possessing those traits, has really helped me to realize that you shouldn’t take bad faith criticism personally.
