Europe is warming at a rate that’s more than double the pace of warming worldwide since the mid-1990s, due to melting Arctic sea ice, reduced pollution-related aerosols, and less snow cover. These changes are also altering weather patterns, leading to more frequent and intense heat waves.

Part of my @countdowneurope.bsky.social contribution w/ @shourodasgupta.bsky.social. Tracking temperature & labour supply over time in high exposure sectors (e.g. ag, construction). Higher temperatures associated with lower labour supply in Southern Europe. Yet more #climatechange implications.
Map of European countries showing southern European sub-national regions generally shades of red (lower labour supply, high exposure sectors) associated with higher temperatures, northern sub-national European regions generally shades of green (higher labour supply, high exposure sectors, associated with higher temperatures).Figure with time on x axis (1995-2023), impact of higher temperatures on labour supply in high exposure sectors in Europe on y axis; mean is trending downwards over time, with increasingly wide confidence intervals over time, suggesting that for Europe as a whole, increasing temperatures are having a negative impact on overall labour supply in high exposure sectors, but high variability across the region
