I profess; I digress; I try not to make a mess. Mostly just pics of amateur baking efforts these days. World is on fire; trying to stop the flames but also eating cake.

I know we have A LOT of serious stuff to deal with but like just real quick, one thing in southern CA: I think the pollen lever valve may have been left open — can someone get that? I was outside for two whole hours and my face is sand paper and my lungs are mud and I’d like to exchange all my skin.

I can’t believe it’s practically Sunday evening already. It’s not at all what I thought I would wake up to after laying down for a nap Sunday late afternoon. (It’s complete brain misfire nonsense how disoriented I am.)

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

It was all one nap. The renovation work, the upsetting Thanksgiving convo, — all still the same two hour nap. Inceptioned myself.

Had lunch, took a nap, woke up, and found everyone in the house was making great progress moving furniture and packing books for a renovation project, got upset with one of my children discussing thanksgiving plans, and took another nap with insane dreams of being in NYC only to wake up and find -

I wish whoever is running all these Dem's social media would be sensitive to the fact that we are all being actively traumatized multiple times a day. Tell us what you're doing to combat the coup or don't post anything at all and just work.

When I get to the thick hectic last weeks of March, too far from spring break to put things off but enough into the term that I’m overwhelmed, I will ask myself, why didn’t I prep this over winter break. Surely there was time. And the reason I didn’t will always be the same. Naps. Glorious naps.

I’ve been blocking bot followers like Fruit Ninja out here (some still def fooling me) but I just realized that the accounts that seem to just be posting news-y headlines (especially a day old) with no news links… a lot of those are bots too, yeah?

@bsky.app when you update a thread, shouldn’t the whole thread with the first and most recent posts highlighted go to the top of your profile feed? How else do you make a thread you want to update occasionally findable? Usable? Please advise. 🙂

Am I doing threads wrong over here or do they not post the way the did at the other place. Added a new entry to my baking thread but the latest post doesn’t show up first and the whole thread is still buried far down below all other posts. Can we not do occasionally updated long threads here?

Last #baking endeavor for 2024: a cinnamon crumble topped apple pie. Super delicious despite what it looks like. It was for NYE feast and I had to bake it in the convection oven to keep main free for pork chops. It signed the top. Feast was mango salsa and pork chops, herb biscuits, veg stew. 😋

For Xmas in 2024, I used the gingerbread cookies with American buttercream recipe in my new frosting book — AMAZING. The pie, a pecan apple with butter, didn’t go as well. I rushed it out of the oven. 🙁

Having made every recipe except the cheesecake (no interest in the fam!) from my Maira Kalman book, I sought a new cake book. These recipes are incredible, but I am struggling with the flour in the British recipes that all call for self-rising four, which I am less familiar with. Tasted amazing tho.

In April, I tried frosting roses. It was fun, but I haven't gone back to it... I should! As work started to normalize after lockdown and then even pick up more... I think I had big gaps where I didn't bake for stretches.

In May, I tried out a flourless chocolate cake. In June, another birthday cake (Salted Caramel Glaze) and in July, one of the great discoveries of that cake book, a pavlova with berries. I LOVE the payola! The crunchy outside and chewy/melty center are so unique and delicious.

It really is a bummer that the other place is such a wreck. I saved my archive before closing up, but like 16 years is a lot of thoughts and memories. I didn’t realize until I started combing through for bits I wanted to keep how much it really was a kind of strange fun micro-blogging. To new skies.

There's so much more #baking and I wanted to pull it all over here tonight because we also started a tradition of New Year's Eve feasts, with the kids doing the bulk of the food. We did it again tonight, and I wanted to share, but I couldn't lose the history that got us here (even if just for me)

Then, COVID. Like so many, more baking. First I made wildly colorful protein muffins because we couldn't get eggs for coloring. I also made a carrot cake just because. It was April 2020.
