Worth a read every year. But this year? For the 250th? It's scorching. Read it to you family or friends. Find a town square and read it out loud. Repost it. Nothing you hear today will frame this country better. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

This is the perfect time to read the entirety of Frederick Douglass’s famous speech, and not merely because of the date on the calendar.

Every Dickens book has a moment where it’s unclear whether he’s going to choose the good or bad outcomes for his characters and generally the outcomes are like 75% good, but if you just chose all bad you simply get Thomas Hardy

I feel like digital humanities was this great 15 year moment of techno-optimism that created solid resources and showed how old media connected to new media. Whereas AI is going to introduce a period of techno-cannibalism designed to devour digital humanities labor and anyone else in its proximity.

I am at this same conference and was shocked and angered at this admission. An hour of my life wasted- but what I like about this thread is the deep sadness expressed about ceding our expertise to a lackluster machine that produces mediocre output at best.

I don't really understand how it is seductive, when the process of writing is itself the process of untangling the intellectual knots between what you've learned and your changed understanding of the world as a result--what do you get out of circumventing that process except empty text?

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

I understand the sentiment, but feel just the opposite. AI is saturating every surface of students’ lives. What we have to offer them is not small tweaks to their engagements w the technology, but rather spaces separate from it via which they can develop their own critical faculties.

This is also why Stevie, Z, and Datsyuk were such beasts when they worked on their defensive game. No sacrifice of offensive talent to become better defensively; seems we need more of that and not hoping guys like Appleton suddenly learn to score 15-20 a year.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, one of the Victorian era's most celebrated English poets, was renowned for her lyrical, passionate & intellectually rich work. She expanded what women could write about and how seriously they were taken. She was born #OTD in 1806. #WomensHistoryMonth #poetry #literature
A vintage black-and-white engraved portrait of Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, shown in a three-quarter view seated in an upholstered armchair. She is a woman in her thirties or forties with large expressive dark eyes and a gentle, introspective expression as she gazes directly at the viewer. Her dark hair falls in soft, full ringlets around her face and over her shoulders, parted in the middle with a small decorative hair accessory visible. She wears a dark, long-sleeved Victorian dress with a fitted bodice buttoned down the front, wide puffed sleeves, a white lace collar and cuffs, and a voluminous skirt. In her lap rests some papers, which she holds with her left hand; her right hand holds a quill pen. Behind her is a softly rendered background with foliage and rose bushes, evoking a serene indoor or garden-like setting. The overall style is a detailed 19th-century steel engraving or lithograph, with fine shading and cross-hatching to create depth and texture.
