Access to textbooks continues to be a major hurtle for my Jane Austen Class. Our campus does not have a textbook store. We have a "merch" store & then contract the third party eCampus, which purchases ZERO texbooks to stock, rather just middle-man orders them for students frm publishers on demand.

Today my Jane Austen class read this Defector piece, Close Reading is for Everyone, and some chapters of Pride & Prejudice where not much happens, but rather we are invited to observe how the characters act/react to one another. defector.com/close-readin...

Pretty thrilled that across my Jane Austen classes this term I have students called Emma, Lizzy, and Lydia. We are woefully short of heroes though. Nary an Edmund, Frederick, or Fitzwilliam in sight.

A constant teaching obstacle at my institution is textbooks. There is no physical textbook store, just a third party middle-man that only orders the students' books when they submit an order the first week of classes. Nobody's books will be here until week 3 of term. Student Success?

Making copies of Jane Austen at 250: Reading for Pleasure syllabus, more affectionately known as Analog Austen. I taught this class last Fall w great success & resounding cheer frm the students. They loved going analog. They loved reading physical books & writing by hand. They loved our community.

I'm exhausted by reading the latest hot take on AI. Lately I've been channeling energy twd reading amazing scholarship by my colleagues & it is so much more enriching. AI is still out there destroying critical thinking & the planet, but my colleagues in #18thCentury studies are publishing bangers.

Another day in the weeds with early 19th century periodicals. Bonus: catching a publication attribution error that one journal made, which was re-quoted/reprinted for about 80 years.

Being online in any/all ways is just crushing now. When I open social media/Google, I get ads trying to sell me things based on my grief, on common illnesses for my dog's breed, on the assumption that I must hate my body. A constant bombardment reminding me of sadness—all for someone else's profit.
