There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

Laid Off After 50, and No Health Insurance? Here’s What to Consider. (Gift Article)
At best, older workers will struggle to find health insurance that bridges the years before they qualify for Medicare at age 65.

both the providers and companies who want to adopt these tools could spend a *fraction* of what they’re spending on the actual tools to have well-documented training and help systems that could onboard everyone and make them much more efficient much faster, but no one wants to spend money on it

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

I think we'd see a lot more urgency about regulating AI in Silicon Valley if the AI agents suddenly developed a sense of restorative justice, and instead of them threatening humanity with total extinction, they just wanted to redistribute wealth and reverse power hierarchies.

One of the most important and powerful things art can do is not to reflect yourself back to you, especially as you'd like to see yourself, but to make you imagine someone whose life is very different from yours, whose values may be very different from yours, and to consider them as a full person.

the from-its-inception flawed “separate the art from the artist” works a lot better for charles dickens than it does for the de facto leader of an active hate movement monetizing your attention & enthusiasm to continue her quest to literally dehumanize people by working to strip their human rights.

patriarchy, like white supremacy, is not "natural," as much as its practitioners insist it is. and of course, most of the time "natural" = "biblical." it is a system of power. it's a choice. it just becomes wallpaper because it's so endemic, but it's weird! we can make other choices! Égalité!
