Had an absolute ride reading and reviewing this book! The level of thought Mahmud has put into every thread of the story is, very much, madness. The review is also from a new substack of mine, so feel free to follow if you're interested in such writing.

The Nazir story is definitely AI. Way too many tells to refute it. Shambles that an institution like the Commonwealth Foundation Creative is rewarding slop (regional winner ffs!), which in turn is being published blindly by Granta. We're in the end times, fellas.

At this point, I think the entire publishing industry needs to have a serious conversation about the degree to which the last 15 years have increasingly seen book promo become an online venture, and what that means now that entire social media and digital platforms are getting torched overnight. 🧵

Why is this so accurate and painful and also hilarious all at the same time
A text from the novel The Ministry of Time that says
The great project of Empire was to categorize: owned and owner, colonizer and colonized, evolue and barbarian, mine and yours. I inherited these taxonomies. This, I think, was the reason I played fuck-about-Fred with my ethnic identity as much as I could. 'They' are still in charge and even when 'they' are saying marginalized instead of mongoloid they are still acknowledging that we are an issue to be dealt with. When would it be my turn to hold the carrot and stick? My sister had grandiose chat about dismantling the carrot-stick complex altogether, but this manifested in being upset all the time, tweeting enthusiastically about debut authors of color who never seemed to publish second novels once the publicity cycle ended, and being underpaid.

In current social media parlance, if you say something's your favorite, it ends the conversation. If you say something's the best, it's rage bait. In between lies the wasteland of decorum.

Fascinatingly, this nakedness (which is not a matter of shame or lack of civility but a common virtue) is compensated with flowers and jewelry that adorn the bare upper body and legs. Class distinction occurs in this manner, as is evident in old Sangam poems and post-Sangam epics.

It is impossible not to see the correlation between this excellent article and the regular online discourse around why cozy sff has primarily been a white author's genre. The author demographic might have evolved somewhat over the last 2 years, but this is still a great critique.
