This seems to baffle people who *don't* teach History -- you keep shoving it at us and saying, I dunno, seems like you could use it? -- instead of *listening* to us. We do this for a living. Trust us, this doesn't have a use here. Go tell your plumber you want him to use a GameBoy on your pipes.

This article begins with the following proposition: “the warrior ethos is no longer useful philosophy for any military service…the warrior ethos is largely a stumbling block to the professional development of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.” An excellent piece. www.usni.org/magazines/pr...

This was apparently related to a Commonwealth-wide enquiry by the UK government about the official designation of the war, particularly in connection with official histories. I should take a look at the explanatory note at some point, presuming it's survived along with various Cabinet memoranda.

I’ve seen copies of the memo, and can likely conjure one up once I’m back from vacation. There was a 1947 Cabinet decision to use "Second World War," which is also relevant: central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.redirect?ap...

An American classic!
Every time I read The Great Gatsby, the final paragraph brings me to tears. Breathtakingly powerful writing.
"I'm alive! said Gatsby, roaring past in a speedboat. He's faked his own death and gotten away with everything. That's why they called him the Great Gatsby. "Out of the way, current!" he yelled at the water. "This speedboat is bearing me ceaselessly into the future!"

But like the war itself, resolving the source issue is complex owing to Canada's access to information regime. I think the lack of a widespread publication is because each volume is like 400-600 pages on glossy paper! A herculean effort by Maloney and one that is important.

Andrew Burtch @postwarhist.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
It's an interesting piece that I think oversells the idea that official histories produced in the aftermath of the Second World War were free of interference or without flaws. Maloney's work has flaws as does any historical work. The bigger question about sources is a good one.
