We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

Fundamentally this is also an argument against caring about anti-Arab and anti-Muslim discrimination, because it's not as bad as anti-Black racism. Which is a stupid fucking argument.

This is also something that North American Muslims have to worry about, it's kind of sickening to watch people dismiss the importance of ideologically driven violence against a community as a basis to be concerned for their safety and welfare.

The best image caption I have seen so far on Wikipedia. (To be fair, it's in the section about sending the newts to space but I still love the clarification.) 🧪
Two newts floating in water. The image caption reads "Iberian ribbed newts in an aquarium (on Earth)."

The underappreciated point here is that taking the messy, contingent nature of scheduling, communication, and navigating social relationships is something that AI people think these tools can do. When in fact it is quite difficult and takes a lot of social skill.

so many issues here, but among them: they are SO CONCERNED about neurodivergent men supposedly being unable to navigate asking women out while respecting consent, and not at all concerned about neurodivergent women having to thread the needle of saying no clearly but not in a "shaming" way

‘Don’t feed the trolls’ really is good advice – here’s the evidence
A new study suggests that the pleasure of getting an angry reaction is the biggest predictor of online trolling behaviour – meaning that the best way to fight back is just to ignore them.

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."
Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

All we can expect when trying to scale up AI systems is diminishing returns and devastating environmental damage. Calls for `slowing down’ can conveniently hide the diminishing returns, while still convincing people that the tech is “all powerful”.

The Anthropic, Meta, and Google "breaking containment" incidents all resulted from setup errors (or a stunt) by the same company: Irregular. Irregular created a sandbox that wasn't really a sandbox because it had a live internet connection, and gave instructions that were then carried out online.

If the pope released a statement that the world was ending next Tuesday with the rebirth of the Messiah, the job of a reporter isn't to schedule an interview with Jesus H. Christ reborn but to figure out what's wrong with the pope Media accepting "AI" millenarianism as fact is genuinely disturbing

Even stronger: there is at present no reason to believe "AI" can even functionally approach anything close to human-level cognition before the sun dies out. Can it fool us? Yes! But it isn't anything other than a bunch of scams in a trechcoat

I was particularly struck by two people who, independently, said they were actively looking for the benefits of AI at work and I feel like, if you have to look, there's probably not a benefit? I mean, I'm absolutely a fan of appropriate automation, but why are we doing big tech's product-market fit?

I cannot describe the brokenness I felt reading this from the Haaretz piece. The hostages were betrayed by everyone; Israeli leaders, the diaspora leaders & their orgs, the entire pro-Israel industrial complex, and by far and away the millions of people who cried "hostages" to support a genocide.
"He told me that in the first stage, they had no problem releasing all civilians without anything in return," Mashharawi recounts. "I swear, those were his exact words: all civilians, without anything in return. They had only one condition: They wanted us to bring in an agreed-upon mediator as quickly as possible, so that negotiations could immediately begin over everything else – the release of soldiers and officers in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and then the issue of the blockade on Gaza."
