The best piece I’ve read about Farage in a long time. We cannot afford to have, as the leader of the country, someone so hysterically quick to point the (trigger) finger when it suits him. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

To the people voting for Nigel Farage: is this really the finger you want on the red button? | Marina Hyde
The Reform leader’s reaction to the RAF Fairford affair is again revealing. If what’s needed is a steady hand and cool head, he’s not the guy, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

🚨BREAKING Heidi Alexander has just announced that, for the first time since rail privatisation, the government will consider public ownership of rolling stock for all new trains This is wonderful news. They shouldn't only consider it; they should deliver it
We OWn It statement on rolling stock announcement: “Other countries own their own trains, and we should do the same. This is a super smart decision for the long term future of the railway. “Ownership of the trains is the most profitable part of the railway. We need to own these assets directly so that passengers can benefit with money going in instead of leaking out. “Rolling stock ownership is key to making public ownership of our railway successful. ”

We're speaking about public ownership of water at #LabourConference2026 w/ @serauk.bsky.social, @sascampaigns.bsky.social & @labourlewis.bsky.social. Our privatised water system is broken. 92% of Labour members back public ownership. It's not only essential, is feasible.

Andy Burnham is right: in the 1980s Britain took a "wrong turn" by privatising life's essentials Our bills have gone up along with shareholder dividends, while the quality of the service has fallen Our NEW REPORT explains how Andy Burnham can deliver public ownership: vist.ly/5jtkd
Screenshot of a Utility Week headline that says "Campaign tells government to ‘squeeze’ utilities and enforce public ownership: Campaign group We Own It is pressing the Prime Minister to consider taking water companies and electricity networks into public ownership, proposing a strategy of "squeezing" them until they become unprofitable. The report suggests a model where 100% of profits are reinvested in services, with governance structures including representation from households and environmental organisations."

How privatisation works (and Thames Water is just the latest example). 1. A government takes a national asset built up with taxpayers' money and the work of public servants over many years, and hands it, for a fraction of its value, to a private company. 2. In doing so, it creates a monopoly. 🧵

Without downloading any new pics, where are you at mentally?
Carl Bloch “In an Osteria”, in the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen.

The setting is in the interior of a Roman tavern. In the forefront, there is a table with three customers: a young man is facing two young women. The one on the left of the man wears a headscarf in the typical garb of married Roman women at the time. The man is seen turning toward the onlooker with an angry expression, whereas the woman at his right is looking with a smiling one, and the (presumably slightly older) other woman looks amused in the same direction. A cat sits to the left of the young woman, silently judging the onlooker.
The painter depicted himself in the background, sitting at a table talking with two friends; his back is turned to the viewer.

🚨NEW FROM ANDY BURNHAM He is absolutely right that households have been a blank cheque for these companies since 1989 Now he MUST stand up to privatised water by saying NO to any more bill rises and taking back failing companies Andy Burnham, can you rule out allowing any bill increases?
Quote from Andy Burnham: "Households “have been asked to pay more for years, yet serious pollution incidents are at record levels and the pipes are still leaking... Customers cannot be treated as a blank cheque. Where water companies seek to pass unnecessary costs on to households, they will be challenged.”"
