I tried to find common ground with others on this panel tonight, but this is one area of fundamental disagreement. Unnecessary car traffic pushing through the Market degrades the experience for everyone else, and limits the potential to create a more welcoming street for people to shop and enjoy

I recall an interview with a chemist(?) which touched specifically on the fact that soda bottles have -- like -- four completely different kinds of plastic (the bottle itself, the cap, the label, and that little blue seal in the cap), and how that made recycling them more difficult than metal cans.

I've been walknig around Pioneer Square, looking at the food trucks and streets where people can walk without fear, and saying "we can do this ALL the time" throughout the World Cup. Pedestrianization works best when you just do it, rather than Seattle Processing the concept until it's a no.

So long as you’re not invested in very specific start/end points and paths, you can usually start off by designing the solution for the puzzles first (where the boxes end up), and then moving them backwards toward whatever random starting point makes sense.

They are said to be leaving this state. Yet collections for a tax on wealth have smashed records — again.

For all the attention on this subject, Washington state has only one new wealth-related levy up and running (a new income tax is still two years away). But the capital gains tax debuted in 2023. It taxes not extreme wealth but profits made from selling assets, mostly stocks (real estate sales are excluded).

To pay this 7% tax you first have to book personal profits north of $278,000 — a windfall so rarefied it has blessed fewer than 10,000 Washingtonians each year.

So what just happened? The state’s chief economist reports that the latest returns have blown the roof off.

“This morning we got the updated numbers for fiscal year 2026 for capital gains … it came in at $1.5 billion,” economist Dave Reich told state lawmakers earlier this month. “So a very significant increase, quite a bit above our forecast from what we had before.”"
