What’s wrong with modern poetry — and how to fix it
Too difficult? Too attention-seeking? Too quiet? In three books, poets Lavinia Greenlanw, Alice Oswald and Denise Riley, wonder what ails the artform

I'm enjoying the miniatures of "Red River Valley", the latest from @imcmillan.bsky.social - very good on memory and shining moments. This reminds me of Causley's "Eden Rock".

Bluesky fact-check please: is the quote actually from "Vortex"? I think it's from "Vorticism" which Pound published later that year (1914) in the Fortnightly Review.

Honoured to be here: paywalled, but I like the effect of Clare's words disappearing into the mist. A 'meteor' into the 19thC meant any atmospherical disturbance, hence 'meteorology'. Clare's 'personal' experience of one was a common tale, as if Clare incorporated folk culture so much he embodied it.

How pleasant to hear Dr Pinkwart is a poet’s apothecary. I expect he prepares lots of stinkwort as an anti-inflammatory. Plus linctures and tinctures - not laudanum as did for our poor S.T.C. - but cod liver oils with real cod in them and tisanes (as Poirot called tea).

Screen shot of Mat Riches' poem called Riches.

Riches

It looked like the sort of wedge

that would choke a shire horse to death:

two grand in bundles of fifties,

their waists pinched by red rubber bands.

You asked me to count the lot,

then drove away to meet a man

who knew a man, and came back late

in a lime-green Ford Cortina.

I thought we were made of money
when you let me sit in your lap

and we reverse-parked it, my feet

pressing on your feet in the dark.

Taken from my pamphlet called Collecting The Data. I'd love you to buy a copy from me or via Red Squirrel Press. If you get it from me it will be signed (if you want it to be).

Alec Guinness on TS Eliot; "I have rarely met a man who could laugh so richly and warmly... I have never met a man with a better palate for a really good, strong, ice-cold, very dry Martini; and I doubt if I have met a man - playwright, poet, man of letters - of greater humility"

Given all this inexplicable noise about the Odyssey, I thought I’d reshare my take on @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social’s (staggeringly good) version, with thanks again to Ange Mlinko for publishing it:
Then again the gods might walk
Untroubled across the earth
Trailing their backstage grammar: myth
Anagnorisis, mask —

And the journey begins before
Departures: leaving a hall of suitors
End-stopped, the prince godspeeds to Pylos
Cresting each salt pentameter.

A stranger holds court in the airport lounge,
Their tale of ships and trickery
Turning me like a page —

Or that first surge of gravity
When the plane tilts to an azure language
Over the middle sea.

Wendy Cope, with a poem of great tenderness
To My Husband

If we were never going to die, I might Not hug you quite as often or as tight, Or say goodbye to you as carefully If I were certain you'd come back to me. Perhaps I wouldn't value every day, Every act of kindness, every laugh As much, if I knew you and I could stay For ever as each other's other half. We may not have too many years before One disappears to the eternal yonder And I can't hug or touch you any more. Yes, of course that knowledge makes us fonder. Would I want to change things, if I could,
And make us both immortal? Love, I would.

I really admire Emily Wilson, but I find this (and much of the LRB review around it) just silly. And weirdly immature. If you would genuinely "be ashamed" to have written "any part" of a script in a successul much-seen film, your privilege is showing.
