I want people to be able to drive a car if they choose to! I also want everyone who doesn't want to own a car or can't afford it to be able to walk, bike, or take high quality public transit with efficiency, safety, and enjoyment, no matter their age, ability, or income status.

NIMBYs online: “there’s no point legalizing more housing, developers will never build enough to lower prices” Edmonton landlords: “help, developers built too much, putting downward pressure on rents”

Had a full up accordion bus pull by me on the road. A stark reminder of the 80-120 cars this took off the road for the foot print of at best 4 bumper to bumper The city would be fooked without public transportation, and any elected official should hammer that home to the people sitting in traffic

High speed rail from Montreal to Toronto really is not a huge lift. We have lots of potential corridors, clear routes into the cities, and obvious demand and potential demand with significantly expanding urban rail systems and densifying downtowns - its painfully obvious.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.
Graphic showing a 9 m wide track for metros can move as many people as a 175 m wide, 7 lane road for cars.

Laudatory, obviously
A meme featuring a penguin, an elephant, and weird penguin-elephant hybrid in Noah's Ark. The elephant is labeled "America," the penguin is labeled as "Europe," and the weird hybrid as "Canada." Noah gestures at the hy rid and says, "What the hell is this?"

This is bigger than any premier or party. If a single elected official can unilaterally advance policies with adverse public safety impacts, we should be asking hard questions about the strength of our democracy & advocating like hell for evidence-based placemaking. #EvidenceBasedPlacemaking

Ottawa and Helsinki are cities of similar size and climate; eliminating homelessness, creating a transit focus and eliminating traffic fatalities should be something we aspire to and not just with empty words, but with concrete action because it is indeed possible. 1/

I'm working on a theory that the single biggest political problem in Canada is the relative neglect of provincial politics.

NEW: Pope Leo XIV told the world’s press today that the Catholic Church’s moral imagination has long been too narrowed to sexual ethics — and that war, migration, and human dignity are the “much greater, more important issues” of our time.

WATCH this video to understand better why positive and badly needed change in cities can be so HARD AND CONTROVERSIAL, at least INITIALLY when proposed (spoiler — quite often that change becomes popular, or just not noticed much at all, after implementation and once the “status quo bias” wears off."

In the 16 weeks since the Ford government made our city turn off speed cameras, compliance went from 87% to roughly 40%. Just last week, someone drove so fast in a school zone, that they flipped their car. This policy is actively putting kids in danger.
Road Safety Implications — Bill 56
- ASE proven tool for reducing speeds in school areas
- ASE pilot showed major speed reductions after 4 years
- speed limit compliance up from 16% to 87%
- high end speeding from 15% to 0.3%
- post-removal floated shows significant driver behaviour change
