RIP St. Francis of Assisi, died this day 1226, exactly 800 years ago, tomorrow is his feast day. He has always been my favorite saint. "A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows." "Make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love."

One of many Stock Doves living at Monkey Forest in Stoke. 🪶 #Birdfeed #UKnature #UKwildlife #UKbirds #wildlivesmatter #Beautiful
The stock dove gets its name from an old English word meaning "stump" or "tree trunk," because it prefers to build its nests in the hollow holes of old trees.

Origin of the Name
Old English Root: The word comes from stocc, which means a stump, log, or tree trunk.
Hollow Trees: A "stock dove" literally means a dove that lives in tree stocks or hollow trunks.
Nesting Habits: Unlike some other pigeons, these birds look for natural cavities or holes in old trees, farm buildings, or even rabbit burrows to lay their eggs.

A close up of a Common Carder Bee with its hairy foreleg stretched out towards the rusty red centre of a pink-petalled Echinacea bloom. The insect's fuzzy, honey-coloured body is arched around the plant and its transparent, veined wings are folded behind. The thin black proboscis can just be seen protruding into the flower as it extracts nectar.

Monkey Forest this morning. Julian was a great advocate for these beautiful apes. @monkeyforest.bsky.social #Conservation #apes #wildlivesmatter #wildlife
How the Forest Operates
Free-Roaming Environment: Around 140 endangered Barbary macaques live freely across 60 acres of natural Staffordshire woodland rather than in traditional cages or small enclosures.

Trentham Estate

Natural Behaviors: The monkeys exhibit normal social behaviors, forage naturally, and show no typical signs of captivity stress.
Strict Visitor Rules: Visitors must stay on designated paths, maintain a minimum distance of 1 meter, and are strictly prohibited from touching, feeding, or approaching the animals.
Conservation and Welfare Standards.

Accreditation: The park holds official accredited status from the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), which evaluates members on high standards of animal welfare, health, and ethics.

Trentham Monkey Forest.

Endangered Species Support: As part of European conservation efforts for Barbary macaques, the park helps protect an endangered species facing severe threats from the illegal pet trade and habitat loss in Morocco and Algeria.
Education: Staff actively educate the public on primate conservation and the impacts of human-wildlife conflict.

Tiny fungi delights. 🍄 #UKnature #Shropshire #mycology #Shrooms #Fabulousfungi #fungifriends
What is a Fungus?A large group: Fungi are not plants or animals. They form their own separate biological kingdom.Hidden networks: Most of a fungus lives underground. It forms a web of tiny threads called mycelium.Feeding style: Fungi do not use sunlight to make food like plants do. They absorb nutrients from decaying wood, soil, or other organic matter. Many forms: This group includes microscopic yeast used in baking, mold on old food, and bracket fungi on trees.
