“That's 40 *cents*. Cents are a form of currency one hundred times smaller than the reál. I'm not even going to take this. Come back when you have 130 reál.” Isn't it... evil? The order of magnitude between what is asked of a person -- and what they have?

And it goes without saying but this applies to all brains before someone tries to claim I'm being "anthropocentric" or some other accusation that misses the forest for the trees

If all you think of human cognition is "regurgitation of information previously absorbed and rearranged" then I think you have a woefully underdeveloped sense of biology. The human brain isn't like a computer in any way shape or form, and there's no way for a computer to begin to approximate it

It's seriously one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen on a football field. You shouldn't be associated with the sport any more if that's your reaction to an injury

remember how Riley Gaines’ swimming coach raped a bunch of her teammates? then when her career path became TV Nazi she defended him and he claimed he was being targeted for standing up against trans women in sports? anyway she cares deeply about women and girls being safe.

Good thing we don’t have a long history of people incorrectly projecting human traits on computers and overestimating what they’re really doing.
In computer science, the ELIZA effect is a tendency to project human traits—such as experience, semantic comprehension or empathy—onto rudimentary computer programs. ELIZA was a symbolic AI chatbot developed in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum that imitated a psychotherapist. Many early users were supposedly convinced of ELIZA's intelligence and understanding, despite its basic text-processing approach and the explanations of its limitations.

While imperfect and unevenly enforced, the Americans with Disabilities Act was a genuine civil rights milestone that has literally reshaped our society for the better. We should celebrate it loudly.

It would be nice if, at the very least, the people reporting on this stuff properly contextualized it by explicitly stating that if the president can do this the union has ceased to exist. It's not hyperbole or figurative language. There is no union. "Unconstitutional" doesn't cover it.

People ask me: "Dr. Commish, why Light Rail? Why can't the Blue Line just be a bus?" To be clear — I'm a regular bus rider. But this corridor needs buses AND Light Rail. Because Bus Rapid Transit brings only one-quarter of the investment Light Rail does. 🧵

Geralt of Rivia stands ready for combat. He looks over his left shoulder and unsheathes his sword. Behind him is a monster made of twisted branches and twigs with hollow eyes and an open mouth. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt logo is printed in the center, with an additional logo for Expansion Pack: Songs of the Past on a purple banner underneath.

Yeah the buy now pay later service use rates are absolutely terrifying. We already have cities that need to find new power sources because of data centers and we're just now seeing those effects. Idk how it isn't obvious that things are very precarious right now

I can perhaps grant that we aren't *currently* in a recession, but to say people's concerns over stability are just "vibes" and not rooted in reality is frankly unserious. But I'm just a socialist so what do I know about the economy, right?

The job market is stagnant and has been for years. We still haven't actually felt the acute affects of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz (and they're coming) and the longer this conflic with Iran drags on the more difficult it will be to paper over these issues

Genuinely what is the argument for the economy being strong right now? Are we not allowed to point out the obvious potential failure points that the shoe just hasn't dropped on yet? Market growth is built on the back of AI build out that certainly can't provide adequate ROI...

I don't know how much it broke through to people who weren't on the ground in the Twin Cities during Metro Surge, but ICE agents were so horned up for violence that they did shit like shoot through closed doors and into childrens' bedrooms. It was all a power fantasy come to life for them.
“One of the things [the BCA] does is it put rods through the bullet holes,” Moriarty said, adding that the bullet went “in-and-out” of Sosa-Celis’ thigh and kept moving. “[The bullet] goes through the front door, it goes through a closet and then the child’s room, it hits and you can see it in the child’s room, bulging. It stopped in the wall. You can see the protrusion there. You can see how dangerous this was.”

A lawyer for one of the residents of this north Minneapolis duplex examines damage, including a bullet hole, to an interior bedroom reportedly sustained Jan. 14 when a federal agent fired his weapon toward a Venezuelan man following an alleged assault outside. The fragment apparently traveled past a portable crib and a mattress in a room where several small children sleep. (Provided)

Mamdani: I cannot help but think of the words of our 40th president, Ronald Reagan. He famously said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the govt & I'm here to help'" I think nine more terrifying words are actually, "I worked all day and can't feed my family"

This was a "problem" (I think there are positives and negatives that come with that situation) before AI but now with the sheer volume of titles it's so much easier for good games to get drowned out that it's become a bit depressing
000
Alex @pitts4d.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Then add in the fact that I barely have time to play the more mainstream games I'm interested in, let alone the fun indie titles and it's easy to see why so many good games just don't get picked up by a wider audience.

@ironpineapple.bsky.social 's Steam dumpster diving series really highlighted to me how many absolutely outstanding games are out there even in one (loosely defined) genre and drove home how much mainstream success was determined by luck

The appeal to "nature" is the siren song of fascism. It is the insidious lie of the so-called "transcendent" order that seeks to place humanity in its demented thrall, the idea that our desire and need to shape our world and our selves, which itself springs from nature, is somehow not "nature"

Israel's attacks on Lebanon are no accident. It’s the direct result of a regional war manufactured by Trump and Netanyahu. Israel has killed over 1,000 people, including 118 children. More than 1 million displaced. Congress must stop bankrolling this terror campaign.
