Nobody is more punk than babies. The food is vegetarian mush, and it's absolutely everywhere. No matter where they live, they're effectively squatting. They sleep all day and stay up late. They're completely broke. Their music is mostly screaming and amateur drumming. It's so cool.

I was once told by a cop, at a training triggered by a sharp increase in drugging and SA at large events in the 2010s, that their job was to disprove allegations, that 99% of victims were liars, and they were there to lock up people who made false allegations. Which was basically everyone.

Much was made of Trump’s choice not to reinstall Project 2025 architect Roger Severino back at HHS, for example. But in many ways the anti-abortion operatives he’s appointed this time around are worse than that. More fringe, more extreme. More examples here:

They’re doing an “abortion survivor” narrative for the new White House press secretary
A screenshot of a threads post Afshine Emrani that says: Less than sixty minutes. That was all the time left on the clock before an abortion appointment would have ended her story before it ever began. Her birth mother was 19, terrified, and waiting. Then, the phone rang. A Christian counselor stepped in, spoke truth into fear, and pointed toward adoption. A heartbeat was spared. A destiny was preserved. Today, that baby is Katie Zacharia: mother of four, attorney, uncompromising woman of faith, and the newly appointed White House Press Secretary.

There are a lot of details in here about Zuck releasing a half-baked product, but one thing that really stands out is just how weird these folks are. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...
Meta’s A.I. leaders also incorporated OpenClaw into their own lives. Mr. Friedman hooked his agent up to cameras in his house, where it would instruct him to do things like drink water to stay hydrated.
“It sent me a snapshot frame of me drinking a bottle of water and said, ‘Good job,’” Mr. Friedman said at a recent tech conference.
In another instance, while talking to his agent about ways to get better sleep, OpenClaw took over Mr. Friedman’s self-driving Tesla and redirected him to a grocery store to pick up magnesium pills. At Meta’s annual developer conference last month, Mr. Zuckerberg said he had connected his agent to cameras in his martial arts gym so that it could critique his fighting form.
Yet there were safety concerns. Agents could sometimes go rogue or take over software apps. In February, one agent took over the work computer of a Meta safety researcher, deleting her emails uncontrollably.
“I couldn’t stop it from my phone,” Summer Yue, the researcher, wrote on social media. “I had to RUN to my Mac mini like I was defusing a bomb.”

The Social Reckoning is a movie about how liberal institutions utterly lost a war they barely even knew they were fighting nymag.com/intelligence...
By the time the rest of Horwitz's Facebook Files reporting came out, the controversial mechanism behind that 64 percent figure - captured in an internal presentation given in 2016, a full decade before the film
— was well on its way to eating the entire company. In its legacy products, including Facebook's News Feed, algorithmic recommendations had become more central over time, not just for pages but for the next post users would see, deprioritizing social connections in favor of what the company started calling "unconnected" content. By August 2020, the main tensions of the film
- that Facebook's self-serving algorithms were distorting its users' interactions with and views of one another, and the world in general, and that the company didn't care — were not just obvious but quaint. That's when Instagram Reels, Facebook's answer to and clone of TikTok, started rolling out to American users.
Soon, old notions of the feed, and of "public squares," and even "social" media in general, would be overwhelmed by billions of individualized and alienated For You pages, stocked primarily with "unconnected" content from strangers, brands, and influencers, filled by far more advanced algorithms than before. It was a post-social retreat into an opaque system both far larger and more thoroughly designed to serve Meta's needs.
Facebook wasn't just ignoring the problem, in other words. It actually saw, in the source of the problem, its entire future: a platform that didn't depend as much on sharing and posting to grow engagement and consumption; a social network not only supported by targeted advertising, but remade entirely in its image.
In Meta's profit centers, it's recommendations all the way down. This was a view that took seriously the idea, embraced by companies like Twitter and Facebook, that its projects of "democratizing" online publishing and communication were aligned with the project of democracy. The most obvious mistake here was to assume that the tech industry's Obama-era politics were inherent and stable. The bigger but more subtle mistake was to conceive of tech platforms like Facebook as para-civic institutions that, if designed correctly, and built with just the right safeguards, could actually fortify the democratic process, or at least extend the end of history for a few more years. This resulted in a weird dynamic, rendered in near-parody by Sorkin, in which many of the people attempting to hold companies like Facebook accountable — government officials, but critics and journalists too - took marketed claims about the importance of election integrity and free speech and disinformation more seriously than the companies themselves.

It would be a good time to revisit the failures of the late 2010s techlash
Similar tendencies were evident in the early stages of the 2010s techlash. Where liberals saw room for improvement in social media, obsessing over mis-and-disinformation and urging the companies to do better, or else (but not really), conservatives saw opportunity to turn the platforms' foundational bad faith against them, weaponizing their weak and inconsistent commitments to free speech, taking companies' lofty talk about bias, fact checking, and censorship and literally but not always seriously, and turning Democrats' post-election fixation on "fake news" into a joke before taking ownership of the term completely. In 2022, Elon Musk simply bought Twitter, the social media company that had put the most work into its civic and institutional performances, and declared himself "Technoking." Shoot. What could a social media reformist say about that? What kind of platform safeguard or internal research would have prevented it? The problem with Twitter, the discourse-centralizer that provided a useful if deficient "global town square" only to sell it to the world's richest man, was Twitter, and the problem with Facebook was Facebook.Understanding Facebook as an institution that is merely failing to meet its full potential makes less sense now than it did five years ago, and especially ten, in part because its nominal mission keeps changing, often in ways that bear little resemblance to the company as it actually exists. In 2016, Facebook had been "connecting the world." In 2021, it was building the Metaverse, a crypto-infused, "embodied internet where you're in the experience, not just looking at it." In 2026, it is using AI to give everyone "an exceptionally capable personal agent that understands you, your goals, and everything you care about." All the while: ads. Facebook did what it wanted, told a variety of largely irrelevant stories along the way, escaped serious accountability, brushed off controversy, made more money, and recommitted, again and again, to a mission of unsentimental attention-and-data-driven growth at all costs.
