Latest WSJ poll: "63% want to pause AI development 61% want a billionaire wealth tax 59% want Medicare for All 57% want a $20 minimum wage 58% want to end U.S. military aid to Israel" This is the center of the country politically. it is time all adjust to this political spectrum, esp. media.

A question I sometimes ask students or workshop participants is... A commitment to prison and policing means you have to ignore many things…What do we have to ignore? I ask people to make a list... It's always a long one. You can make a similar list for the death penalty...

Tennessee plans to execute a woman tomorrow. She was 18 when she committed the crime. She's now 50. Like most on death row, she's also a victim. And like most on death row, she's a far different person now than she was then. No one humanizes the condemned better than @lilianasegura.bsky.social.

Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...
So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

What do you think when you hear that?

The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter?

That’s my question for you.

Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does.

But there must be some set of skills that matter.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those.

There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address. And I ——

I don’t really believe that to be true.

It’s completely true. Janine will tell you and Lori will tell you.

One day I had to pump gas — it was a few years ago. They needed my ZIP code, and I panicked. I didn’t know my ZIP code. I don’t know my telephone number. I forget these things. I can live with it.

But let me take the other side because I don’t want to fall into a thing where, because some skills can be safely offloaded ——

Yeah.

I also can’t get anywhere without a mapping system now. Never could, frankly. But I’m a big reader. And one of the skills I really value, one of the capacities I have that I really value is an attention span formed on physical books.

You’re a big reader. I’ve read about the kind of reading you do. And there is, prior to A.I., a lot of concern and noticing among college professors and others that the way people use the internet has probably shortened attention spans.
Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off. Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off.

Yeah. Well, I think that we’re going to lose some finer intellectual dexterity, but we’re going to be better systems thinkers.

Today’s engineers are far better systems thinkers than I was when I graduated from school. But I was a much better transistor thinker.

What do you mean by systems thinker?

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.

One of the most pertinent things I've seen said about the so-called AI era is even to the extent it does work and is useful it's all in the service of 'efficiency' or 'doing more' and if you don't happen to think capitalism needs you to bend over to help it even more there's little on offer here

Bookcase 1: Fiction, grouped by type Bookcase 2: Non-fiction, grouped by type Bedside: a very mixed TBR pile. And all of that is very loose. I know what books I have by a digital inventory, not location 😆 I *might* try to keep an author’s multiple works grouped together but it’s not consistent.

Each of the stories has a point where the CogSci influencer has to reveal they would never send their own kids to Alpha. Groshell's kid gets whole books, journaling, and drawing with a human-led, small-group learning while your kid gets repeated foundational skills instruction from a math app.
5. He builds these apps - and he did not send his daughter to Alpha

I love a twist, and Zach produced a good one at the end of our chat.

Zach separates two things that usually get bundled together: the app itself, and what a child does with the rest of the day. “Alpha” is just the name for the schools at the expensive end of this network - apps in the morning, life-skills and projects in the afternoon. But the same apps are being dropped into very different models. There is Texas Sports Academy, for the child who currently suffers through a school that cannot keep order and then comes alive at half three for sport - two hours of apps in the morning, sport in the afternoon, and crucially a model cheap enough to be heading for the US voucher system. There is Montessorium in Austin, where the mornings are unapologetic Engelmann DI and the afternoons are human-led, small-group, Montessori-style academic work.

Zach chose Montessorium for his daughter. Not because he doubts the apps - he builds them - but because she loves reading whole books, journaling and drawing, and the sport-in-the-afternoon model would do nothing for her. The apps, in other words, are not a school. They are an efficient engine for getting foundational skills into a child’s head in about two hours, and that engine can live inside whatever model fits a family’s values. The morning is the foundational skills. The afternoon is where the values actually live
