Imagine Stephen King, circa 1997, putting out daily press releases promoting his anti-gay org while publishing horror books as Richard Bachman. Imagine George Lucas, circa 2007, announcing a billion dollar fund for anti-Muslim lawsuits, then launching 'The Clone Wars.' This is J.K. Rowling today.

“Why are men afraid of women?” “If your strength is only the other's weakness, you live in fear,” Ged said. “Yes; but women seem to fear their own strength, to be afraid of themselves.” “Are they ever taught to trust themselves?” Ged asked “No,” she said.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Teen pregnancy used to be one of the right's top bogeymen. It's now fascinating to watch how their nativism - falling birth rates which now can't be solved by allowing foreigners to join us as Americans- has led them to bemoaning its decline. They're now shifting policies to help teens get pregnant.

i guess it all boils down to: i want people to believe in themselves & their power as much as they believe in politicians. mass movements are the foundation for all forward progress. politicians move only when pushed, and an undeniably powerful mass of people can absolutely do that.

Here’s the thing. If both racial and partisan gerrymandering is perfectly legal, then you won’t live in a democracy. You live in a country where politicians pick their voters not the other way around. It’s pretty much that simple.

It seems significant that one of the first promises of Hungary’s new leader was to abolish their propaganda news (like Fox News). I personally find it nearly impossible to imagine any candidate getting traction here with that same promise. Which also seems significant.

One of the things I love most about Zohran’s rise to power is that it shows so clearly how we could have a better democracy—one that actually serves us instead of just the rich—if the left decides collectively to take electoralism and government seriously. It’s ours for the taking if we want it.

Octavia E. Butler, 1998:
From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING

Choose your leaders

with wisdom and forethought.

To be led by a coward

is to be controlled

by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool

is to be led

by the opportunists

who control the fool.

To be led by a thief

is to offer up

your most precious treasures

to be stolen.
To be led by a liar

is to ask

to be told lies.

To be led by a tyrant

is to sell yourself

and those you love

into slavery.

Oh, I can answer this one! After 2008, private equity decided homes were investment vehicles for them and not for us, and now they’ve driven up the price of housing in every major city in the world, but our hegemonic media treats each crisis as a separate local issue related to supply.

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

Terrific analysis by Steven Poole in the Guardian, teaching me a new word: dysphemism, which is the opposite of euphemism. It’s a way to make something sound “maximally horrible.” Poole examines the “chest-beating fiesta of blood and guts” in Trump and Hegseth’s language about the war against Iran.
