Despite many shitstorms along the way, my spouse & I made it to 30 years of marriage, so we celebrated with a weekend in Chicago. We mostly lounged around but did a tiny bit of sightseeing. Two of the sights that resonated most with me (Chicago lampposts FTW!):

#Scriptsky Carole is a great follow. Always gives great advice. To piggyback on her point, I often meet writers who have lots of pretty good scripts. And I always tell them, “One AMAZING script will do more work for you than 5 or 6 pretty good ones. Pick one, dig in and rewrite. Make it amazing!”

INT. ONE-ROOM HOUSE - DAY
Bloodied, mangled BODIES and decapitated heads with eyes squeezed shut litter a splintered plank floor.
SUPER: 1892
Half-hidden beneath the dead --
A OUIJA BOARD.
BLINK and you miss it.
Against the wall, a FRAIL MAN drenched in blood. His quivering chin rests on the barrel of a shotgun.
His bloodshot eyes, drowning in terror, flicker with each stuttering breath.
They get smaller...smaller...
EXT. ONE-ROOM HOUSE - DAY
BANG!
The shotgun blast echoes across the barren landscape.
The sun sets. Rises. Sets again -- in fast succession, as blood oozes from the walls within.
INT. ONE-ROOM HOUSE - DAY
The CLANK of spurred boots as they scuff through the crimson wasteland, until one step snags -- a spur lodged deep in a bodiless arm.
A good shake of the boot and the bloody limb flumps off, landing on blood splatter that forms a symbol.
The boots belong to SHERIFF BILL (50), cowboy hat, chaps, and a stoic, weathered face with a smoldering cigar clenched between his teeth.
Rookie Deputy BUDDY (25), scrawny and scared of his own shadow, navigates the body parts like landmines until he and Sheriff Bill are side by side.
Buddy gulps to ease the lump in his throat.
BUDDY
Whaddya suppose...
SHERIFF BILL
Can only be one thing.
Sheriff Bill draws on his cigar, the embers glow a fiery red. A pained exhale as he surveys the mayhem.
SHERIFF BILL
The work of the devil himself.
Buddy’s eyes glaze over with terror.
Sheriff Bill ruminates, Buddy steadies his trembling legs.
SHERIFF BILL
Can’t let the rest of the townsfolk see this shit.
BUDDY
Whaddya reckon we do?
Sheriff Bill grabs a bottle of liquor from a small table, takes a swig, then smashes it on the floor.
SHERIFF BILL
Burn it to the ground.
Sheriff Bill chucks his cigar onto the corpses.

Gwen reclines on the far side of the bed, flipping through the contents of an ENHANCED HEALING, LLC folder.

Ellie carefully folds clothes and places them in an open suitcase on her bed.

ELLIE

Mail comes by noon, and water the plants on Tuesday. They pick up trash on Thursday, but you can put the cans out the day before.

GWEN

Where exactly are you going?

ELLIE

It's a private estate. Not far away, only like two hours or so.

GWEN

This it?

Gwen removes a document with a glossy color photo of a beautiful log cabin surrounded by tall fir trees. She scrutinizes the photo with a grimace.

GWEn

You're going to a remote cabin in the woods to spend a week alone with an anatomically correct robot companion? Not weird at all... I mean, trying to be supportive here, but my mind immediately goes to some slasher movie shit.

ELLIE

I highly doubt this company would exist if their robots killed all their clients. Not good for business.

GWEN (O.S.)

All I'm saying is this feels... off. My Spidey senses are tingling--

Ellie snatches the page from Gwen.

ELLIE

I'll be fine. Just do me a favor and don't kill my hibiscus bush.

GWEN

We should have a safe word in case this thing goes into Kill Mode.

ELLIE

Are you high?

GWEN

No! Look, if you text me the word...

She looks around the room. Her gaze eventually lands on a framed painting of sunflowers above the dresser.

GWEN

Sunflowers. That's our safe word! You text me that word and I'll drop everything and come to the rescue.

ELLIE

Sure, fine, whatever.

GWEN

You laugh now, but you may be thanking me later!

She grabs the lake house flyer and snaps a photo with her phone before returning it to Ellie.

GWEN

Remember. Sunflowers.

Ellie rolls her eyes and slams her suitcase shut.

INT. SEDAN - DAY

Ellie drives down a secluded road lined with trees.

She steals glances at her phone mounted to the dash, the navigation screen showing the car icon twisting on a long road surrounded by nothing...

Until Ellie rolls to a stop at a security gate.

Pulling out her paperwork, she punches in a four-digit pin into the panel to open the gate.

Before entering, Ellie glances at the twelve-foot metal fence that looks like it runs forever through the woods.

My spouse’s current go-to breakfast is Grape-Nuts with sliced bananas. Today when I cleaned up the breakfast dishes, I realized that not only do I loathe eating Grape-Nuts (they remind me of aquarium gravel), I also despise the way they smell when they’re wet. UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: When I returned to the bank for my 3:30 appointment, I met with a kind customer service rep who filed a dispute for me. The missing $ was provisionally credited to my account. There will be an investigation, but when the ATM cash is reconciled, my $ should show up as excess.🙂

UPDATE: I took an hour & 15 minutes of vacation time to visit my bank this morning, but the person who needs to handle this issue already had an appointment booked with another customer. I couldn’t stay because I had an important work meeting at 10:00. I made an appointment to go back at 3:30.😐
