EXT. FARM - DAY
Worn leather boots step through dirt, shit, and a sea of white feathers tightly packed together.
SUPER: COLORADO, 1945
CHICKENS. At least fifty, frantically scatter and CLUCK.
A hand as worn as the boots swoops down and effortlessly snatches a chicken.
LEWIS GABLE (42), in tattered overalls, plods through the maniacal fowl, the unlucky bird dangling by his side.
Buried beneath the weathered, gaunt face is a handsome man -- you just have to squint to see him. He’s anything but lazy. He’s simply down on his (c)luck.
Just outside a faded red barn, Lewis approaches a stump that has seen the blade of an axe hundreds of times.
He lays the chicken on the stump, fussing to get it centered.
LEWIS
Thank you for your sacrifice.
Lewis braces the chicken and with his free hand, raises an axe above his head.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
A freshly plucked and cleaned chicken SLAPS onto an aged butcher block.
Cozy. Functional. Wood panel cupboards. Pans hang on the wall. A small wooden table for two next to a window.
SUPER: ONE MONTH LATER
MARY GABLE (38), a rugged beauty who doesn’t flinch at hard work, trudges over to a rack of market-ready chickens and counts under her breath.
She grabs a handwritten note from her apron, skims over it, glances at the chickens, then crumples and pockets it on an aggravated exhale.

EYES
Pupils dilate and contract in bloodshot eyes opened as wide as humanly possible.
The lids twitch, fighting against nature. Tears well.
Heavy, ragged breathing.
INT. ATTIC - NIGHT
Dark. Unfinished. Scattered moving boxes. A cracked mirror leans against the wall.
Blood-spattered SAM (20s), determined, cautious, and resourceful out of necessity, sits on the floor and trembles in silence, her mouth agape.
She tries to form words but can't.
She swallows hard, straining.
Her brow furrows as her top and bottom lashes nearly touch.
In a last-ditch effort, she pries her eyes open, her horrified gaze fixed on --
LIV (20s), just feet in front of her in a mutilated heap -- her arms and legs mangled, jaw unhinged and deep-throating a dented oversized water bottle.
SAM
Oh god!
Sam gags. Again...She can't seem to look away.
She finally steadies herself. Her eyes search for the door.
She rises to her feet and steps over Liv, eyes averted, trying not to break.
At the door, she draws a deep breath as she removes her fingers from her lids. She grabs the handle -- it’s jammed.
SAM
No.
She rattles it with no luck. Fingers back to prying her lids.
SAM
Fuck!

EXT. LAUNDROMAT PARKING LOT - NIGHT
CCTV FEED:
A lone pole light flickers over a shitty sedan parked furthest from the entrance.
Smoke billows from the barely open front windows.
The driver's side door swings open. Out steps KYLE (20s), a college dropout in an oversized hoodie, who gets through life by smoking copious amounts of weed.
Coughing, he stumbles toward the laundromat entrance.
Behind him, the asphalt melts into the pitch-black horizon.
INT. LAUNDROMAT - LOBBY - CONTINUOUS
CCTV FEED:
Rows of identical washers and dryers sit under buzzing fluorescent lights. Monotone with remnants of neon signage.
Kyle skulks in, eyes on the floor to avoid BARB (60s), who wears a permanent scowl.
She follows close behind him. Her mouth moves a mile a minute, arms flail, but the feed is dead silent.
INT. OFFICE - NIGHT
Dark. Cramped. A metal desk with a CRT security monitor.
Barb's muffled voice cuts through the closed door -- a repetitive, rhythmic drone.
Kyle watches her on the monitor, scoffs, then kicks his feet up on the desk and scrolls on his phone.
Barb's voice trails off as she leaves the building.
INT. OFFICE - LATER
Kyle is slumped over in his chair, still scrolling. His face illuminated by his phone.
He is oblivious to Barb marching back inside.
On the screen, Barb beelines straight to a change machine.

A gust of wind whips through the barn, kicking up more dust as Mary watches Lewis skulk out of sight with Kevin.
EXT. JOHNSON’S GENERAL STORE - DAY
Sharp brick building with a striped canvas awning and freshly painted white lettering on the storefront. A stocked wooden produce stand sits next to the entrance.
Mary lugs an old wooden cart, wheels barely hanging on, behind her over an uneven concrete sidewalk. In it, stacks of chicken neatly wrapped in newspaper.
JOHNSON (40s), dangerously handsome and knows it, examines the stand. He pulls up a sleeve and checks the time on an oversized watch when his eyes lock onto Mary.
JOHNSON
Old Louie boy not feeling so well?
A pathetic SQUEAK from the cart’s wheel as it comes to a stop at the stand. Mary bites her tongue and straightens the stacks of chicken.
Johnson hovers over her, watching her every move.
She keeps her eyes down as his shadow engulfs her.
JOHNSON
Now, either I’m bad at math, or you’re short a bird.
Mary’s eyes flick to Johnson.
MARY
Mr. Johnson, please. The flock wasn’t --
JOHNSON
-- No need for excuses.
