![Editor Glenn Kenny has claimed somewhat shockingly that the fact-checking process for this story mostly entailed watching the porn movies it describes to confirm those references’ accuracy. “There’s a lot of stuff in there that’s invented,” he admits freely, offering as example an incident in which a journalist’s glasses were supposedly lost in a porn star’s cleavage, never to be found again. “Obviously, that’s not what really happened. It was more like, Jasmine St. Clair got Evan [Wright] into a choke hold at a party one night. But we said [Premiere’s legal department] should let it go.”
I would argue that it isn’t obvious that didn’t happen, actually. I would argue that the incident appears not in a work of fiction, but in an essay that strives to be observant in even the tiniest sensory details. And so I’m afraid it matters a great deal whether an event represented on the page occurred in a goofy, slapstick, invented way that was extra fun to write. It matters, too, that the “cutting-edge” breast implants Wallace describes at one point, with valves in the bearer’s armpits to adjust the implants’ size at will, didn’t exist.
