Outside the pandemic, U.S. information-sector employment is now at its lowest level in more than a decade. BLS data shows 2.739M jobs in September, down ~12% from the 2022 peak. The entire post-pandemic hiring boom has now been erased. I expected AI to cause Big Tech to shrink but not all tech. 😞

The AI bubble looks a lot like the dotcom bubble including the naysayers. My advice to friends: 1. Valuations will eventually crash. Manage your finances accordingly. 2. AI usage will keep growing and permeate every facet of life. Figure out how it’ll affect your career and plan accordingly.

It's pretty funny to say this right now, when the world's dictators and aspiring dictators are demonstrating their extreme non-benevolence and commensurate inefficiency. Was invading Ukraine efficient? Were the gulf princelings cheerleading the disastrous Iran war efficient?

Successful investors are treated like wise oracles when really they are closer to cunning rats, in that long-term success in the stock market requires scurrying around for food and shelter, and some rats are better at navigating the maze than others.

The clearest and most succinct expression I've read of how, beyond the clear fascist rhetoric, the Prairieland prosecutions have terrifyingly expanded federal legal power, beyond the point many feds even wanted to go.
For other activists on the left — and on the right — the Prairieland case has set a dangerous precedent. Cadeddu, the federal defense attorney, told me that the most worrying of all the “terrorist acts” was vandalism. There is no dollar amount set on what sort of damage might qualify as an act of terror. Even throwing a snowball at an ICE vehicle during a protest and scratching the paint or damaging a taillight might qualify. “In theory, if you happen to be on a Signal chat with some people planning a protest, and one of the people at that protest — you don’t even have to know them — throws that snowball, you could be implicated in material support for terrorism, simply for helping to organize,” she says. “That’s the meaning of the case.”

Given all the recent examples - a Marcos in the Philippines, a Fujimori in Peru, and now (probably) a Bolsonaro in Brazil, I don't think we can rule out the possibility of a Trump kid winning in 2032 or 2036. What a miserable world.

And Peru has another Fujimori. Given those examples I'm not so sure we won't end up with a Trump kid in 2032 or 2036.

It’s interesting how the standard bearer for the party whose message used to be “Democrats suck because they just buy votes by giving people free stuff” has decided the closing message for the midterms will just be “how many more checks do we have to send you in order to earn your vote?”

from 2001. no one’s doing product testimonials like this anymore. t.co/PEswCtbEZz
Toyota's unease at being associated with the Taliban and Al Qaeda is evident. In its September statement, the company said,
'Toyota does not have a sales or distribution channel in Afghanistan, and we do not export vehicles to that country."
Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week.
"It is not our proudest product placement," he said. "But it shows that the Taliban are looking for the same qualities as any truck buyer: durability and reliability."

kind of interesting how well equipped religious teaching—obviously catholic, but really just religious teaching in general—is to meet the AI moment. obviously you don’t have to be religious to hate AI, but a lot of religion does come pre-programmed with anti-AI sentiment.

Anthropic estimates robots can already perform 75% of physical job tasks. However they are only cheaper or close to the cost of humans in just 0.3% of job tasks. The Jetsons completely misled us. Computers are more likely to replace doctors and lawyers before we get robot maids.
anthropic.com
Can we predict the jobs robots will do?
What work can robots do? Anthropic's robot exposure index finds robots can do 3/4 of US physical job tasks, but are cost-competitive for only 0.3%.
