“If you want research led teaching then at a minimum you have to allow teaching staff time to *read* and incorporate new research” I say every year as I object, again, to a workload model that allows 50mins prep per 1 hour teaching.

When I was younger the fear of not getting my degree probably made me never question this. As I get older though I find this statement harder and harder to disagree with :-)

Totally agree. I think there might be more pushback coming as there is still a large number of students who don’t want to just hand over anything and everything to Ai, but we shall see I guess.

100%. My guess, it will be a temporary pause as they effectively have Unis over a barrel: no agreement no use. Will open up some interesting questions as well e.g. a student who doesn’t want to submit for ethical reasons but Uni forcing them for grading. Hard not to side with the student there.

The IT team at UofGlasgow said discussions had meant there would be no change to the current EULA in academic year 2026/27 - so it’s worth checking with own internal groups. Whether it holds is a different matter! There are at least alternatives for marking. Plagiarism is a different matter sadly.

What makes this book unique & important? UK's education is stuck in behaviouro–classical cognitivism. It emphasises telling, repeating, and storage. Teaching Meaning looks to enactive cogsci, a contemporary field based on sense-making, meaning, and systemic relations. @wiringthebrain.bsky.social

One other consideration would be for teaching purposes. I totally get the managed approach and why people would use it, in the days of AI, but as someone who has massively benefited from using open datasets in their teaching, I would love people to keep that usage in mind when setting restrictions.

Selecting an effect size for power analysis is hard. Many researchers fall back on Cohen's thresholds, but they have no empirical basis and vary wildly by field. Our new paper offers a better option: field-specific effect size distributions built from meta-analytic data doi.org/10.3758/s134...
Abstract
Effect sizes are useful for understanding the magnitude of study results and for planning new studies via power analysis.
However, despite their wide usage, effect sizes are often misinterpreted. This is mostly due to an over-reliance on general
effect size benchmarks that were not intended for broad application across diverse research fields. Inaccurate effect size
interpretations can lead to incorrect conclusions about the magnitude of study results and incorrect sample size estimates,
thereby increasing the likelihood of false-positive results. This article introduces the ESDist R package, which is designed
to calculate empirically derived effect-size benchmarks or a range of reliably detectable empirical effect sizes for a specific
research question or field of interest by computing effect size distributions (ESDs). This package can be used on data that
can be easily extracted from pre-existing meta-analyses to help researchers more accurately plan new studies or to better
understand how an individual study might relate to other studies in their field. ESDist includes a set of features that make it
easy to use in a priori power analysis. Moreover, the package includes a feature for estimating effect size benchmarks that
account for publication bias and are weighted by effect sizes' variances, which addresses existing limitations of using ESDs
for study planning or interpretation.

Updates to #PsyArXiv moderation policies blog.psyarxiv.com/2026/03/23/u...
"From March 2026, moderators have added additional checks to ensure that authors have complied with all the terms of service for PsyArXiv. Moderators will also use authors’ past publication record to establish scholarly expertise for formats such as reviews, case studies, opinion pieces, etc. or topics where moderators have less experience, such as theories of consciousness, linguistics, philosophy, psychiatry, computational theory, etc. Such formats and topics require more specialist knowledge to establish whether they are in scope as scientific psychology, and what their scholarly contribution represents; hence, submissions cannot be evaluated by moderators in only a few minutes, and we rely on established scholarship to inform decisions. Submissions also need to be complete enough that they represent an independent contribution to the field of psychology, so slide decks and working papers presented as notes or research proposals or with incomplete methods will no longer be accepted into the archive, as they also require more than a few minutes to evaluate. We encourage authors to use OSF projects to record and version work-in-progress. However, PsyArXiv continues to accept stage 1 registered reports, where they pass standard checks for well-crafted registered reports. "
