St. Nicholas was the only house of worship destroyed on September 11. Its rebuilding reflects the spirit that carried New Yorkers through the days, months and years in the wake of the attack: a belief in each other, the hope of recovery, and a determination to begin again.

And it was actually reflected in polling- there was a broad *increase* in support for Muslim Americans after 9/11, because of signaling from leadership. But that was indeed short-lived, as what began as outbursts of Islamophobia became policy and political ideology over the next decade.

I think it’s helpful to realize that worldviews- political, ideological, religious, etc- are primarily used by people to imbue events in the world with meaning, rather than explain why they happen. People can easily tolerate a lack of understanding, but no one can tolerate a lack of meaning.

What’s happening in Texas is indeed very concerning. It is tho reminiscent (and likely derived from) the organized Islamophobic activism that followed the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy in 2010 and the included proposed bills in TN that would have banned Muslim ritual practice entirely.

This strikes at the very heart of what above all makes America a great nation. That we would combine the ancient virtue of hospitality with the modern cause of freedom. This was our mission! To be “an asylum for mankind” (Paine, Common Sense). And we’ve abandoned it.

Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself.
In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior.
On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people - and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.
