And it was actually reflected in polling- there was a broad *increase* in support for Muslim Americans after 9/11, because of signaling from leadership. But that was indeed short-lived, as what began as outbursts of Islamophobia became policy and political ideology over the next decade.

Slight counter point: it’s entering the common lexicon fast, and anecdotally here in SC people on both sides know exactly what it means, regardless of their education level. It’s definitely discussed by “regular people,” and it does key into existing convos among evangelicals.

See book below on that period; iow what’s happening in TX it is indeed as bad as it looks- but sadly is actually a replay of a previous movement (and tbh I don’t think it will get nearly as far this time).

I really appreciate this point in principle; but unfortunately many evangelical denominations don't consider Orthodox or Catholic Christians in MENA Christian at all, as a matter of theology and policy Ex: the SBC's official designation of all MENA Odox and Catholic as not "believing Christians"

Reminds me of a great moment during the 1788 constitutional convention in North Carolina when someone objected to the no religious test clause by saying "wait does this mean that a Muslim could theoretically be president?" and the response was "you betcha"

“The fight before us is a long one. You will not live, nor will I live to see the triumph of the principles for which we are contending; let us not become discouraged however… Now and then there are gleams of light, which indicate the coming of a better day.” -Francis Grimké, 1905

One of the greatest modern Muslim theologians, Fazlur Rahman, had a brilliant term for this: hypomorality- the state of distraction, apathy, and flightiness that the Qur’an teaches is the fundamental weakness of human nature.
