If you want to know why TGJones is closing stores and struggling, just look at this mess. You can't reach the top shelf, or see what is being sold. Then you can't see what is on the bottom shelf as it's hidden from view. Its USP is treated so badly. Madness #TGJones #WHSmith

Was reflecting last night on the ongoing validity of the #licenceFee and the need for us to pay for #PublicServiceBroadcasting: something struck me ... the BBC is older than television. Auntie started in 1922, the licence fee started in 1923 and is based on the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1904.

I've said this a few times this week - the Beeb needs to adopt an Ally Pally mentality. Find studio space and give people permission to create in it. Low budget, rough around the edges, theatre, comedy, plays, drama, lectures, book at bedtime ... Just make stuff and see what sticks.

Train travel in the UK: Truly nothing more frustrating that someone refusing to move from the seat you've reserved before it has even left the station at the start of its journey. Now standing in a corridor as a result. Even worse - TrainPal never reserves parent & child seats together.

This jumble sale approach to merchandising of magazines in WHSmith and TGJones infuriates me. News and mags can be impulse purchases, but you need to see the covers to make a snap decision to buy. The stores have a unique proposition on the High Street and they act as if they are ashamed of it.
Some magazines on show in WHSmith. Because of the way they have been placed on the shelves you can't see the covers, only spines.
It's a mess and doesn't invite the consumer to interact with the products.

£1.36 for a bargain bin Mars bar in WHSmith. What was it at full price? Five squillion pounds? How I miss the WHCarpet account.
A selection of items in the WHSmith Reduced to Clear section.
A single Mars bar has been reduced to the bargain price of £1.36.
Which is still more expensive than. A bar in a normal shop.

This alert popped up just as I was writing this post. Everything we can do to minimise climate change and *also* to prepare for the environment of the future is worth it. We don't have to hide, or avoid, or wait for others to act - it's much better for us and the future to change things now.
Text message: "Severe Alert
Issued by the UK Government
now
There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks.
Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire placing lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.
Follow official updates and report signs of fire immediately by calling 999. Search gov.uk/alerts for more information."
