Thanks. I have such a disconnect with modern telly and its ways that it stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

Genuine question - the credits lists lots of producers and executive producers. Why does modern telly need so many? Are they different roles to what 60s and 70s producers were?

Just finished a rewatch of Life On Mars / Ashes To Ashes. Minor spoilers ahead. The final episode is both satisfying and unsatisfactory. I don't like seeing Gene helpless. A lot happens without full explanation - just implication. Should have been ambiguous? Makes me pine for another series

They are cheap for a reason...they won't last long. I'm currently wearing Superdrug's entry level specs - bit more expensive but better quality. I might get six months out of these, some Pound shop ones haven't even lasted a weekend.

Amazing how this was like a mayfly - massively popular, ended the Generation Game and then ... Faded quickly. IIRC the final series was 45 minutes on Sunday (a scheduling decision that provoked concerns)

If you want to know why TGJones is closing stores and struggling, just look at this mess. You can't reach the top shelf, or see what is being sold. Then you can't see what is on the bottom shelf as it's hidden from view. Its USP is treated so badly. Madness #TGJones #WHSmith

Having grown up with the feudal ITV system, having good people on the ground creating amazing stuff can only be a good thing. The world would be a poorer place without Fred Dinenage learning his trade on Southern before heading to World of Sport.

I sometimes wonder what I'm missing. The Beeb should be local up: strong local radio with local programming made by local talent. Best gets networked/ on Sounds. That generates new content for nationals, which in turn creates a steady supply for TV and radio ... relatively cheaply. Why the opposite?

The first demonstration of television as moving pictures came in 1925 and Stooky Bill. The first TV station was in the US in 1928. The BBC didn't start TV transmissions in 1936. So the idea that TV is a public service and needs a licence fee has always been baked into the UK's ecosystem.

Was reflecting last night on the ongoing validity of the #licenceFee and the need for us to pay for #PublicServiceBroadcasting: something struck me ... the BBC is older than television. Auntie started in 1922, the licence fee started in 1923 and is based on the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1904.

Phil Creighton @philcreighton.uk · 23/09/2026
You're buying into the need for the nation to have public service broadcasting. Having visited countries where TV is a free-for-all, I know which setup is superior. And it's definitely not the US where the viewer is treated with contempt.
010
Phil Creighton @philcreighton.uk · 23/09/2026
The public service remit and purpose of the BBC are explicitly set out within the BBC Royal Charter. I'm sorry if that is an inconvenient fact for you, but a fact it is.
110
Phil Creighton @philcreighton.uk · 23/09/2026
It's still a public service. There is no better way to fund it than the licence fee: those that want to watch TV pay it, those that don't don't. Without the BBC we lose so much - from soft power across the globe to cultural enrichment from stuff like the Proms and schools programming.

I love BBC Four, but it's time to go. When BBC Two is showing repeats in prime-time during peak autumn season something is very wrong. Bring back Def Two strand, use daytime for BBC Four repeats and stick TOTP on Fridays after NewsNight.

I've said this a few times this week - the Beeb needs to adopt an Ally Pally mentality. Find studio space and give people permission to create in it. Low budget, rough around the edges, theatre, comedy, plays, drama, lectures, book at bedtime ... Just make stuff and see what sticks.
171
Phil Creighton @philcreighton.uk · 23/09/2026
The licence fee is a common good. It enables us to have public service broadcasting which includes radio as well as TV. I only use a fraction of what the Beeb provides but I know my contribution benefits the wider population.

Absolute pain. I resent a two-year contract, with two years of in-contract price rises, coupled with the penalty fees for leaving/letting the contract become a rolling one. I cannot wait for the full fibre rollout to be completed in our road so we can leave at the next opportunity.

I have no recollection of the change, but did watch both. Thought the revival was excellent. I'd revive it in the post-Grandstand slot. Fantasy schedule: 5.30 Crackerjack > 6.10 Gladiators > 7 Dr Who > 7.45 Gameshow > 8.15 Ann Droid > 8.45 Casualty > 9.30 Comedy > 10 News > 10.15 MOTD

Should never have moved. Provided a perfect buffer for the watershed and allowed films/dramas in the 9.30pm slot to be whatever length was needed. Beeb would have a stronger line-up if they'd kept it.
