I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

What a very twee idea. I think the “press” could be broken up but the news content and the tone of it would be exactly the same. The media eco system operates outside what the “press” is with podcasts, influencers, X, etc etc.

Hardly an original take but it is Quite Annoying to imagine how much the UK (and me, and you!) would all have more cash today if Donald Trump hadn't decided to start bombing Iran for *reasons*. Where's the White House impact assessment on my nursery fees. www.ft.com/content/2cb1...

I’d rather twist it round. I don’t blame Reform for its rise or its voters, I blame the mainstream parties for giving it the space to rise. Engaging with voters is essential. Burnham can do this and Reform is beginning to drop in its popularity but it’s a hard slog ahead.

I think it’s much more complicated than that. If you look at Australia this year the far right party One Nation has been ahead in the polls and could quite likely to be the leading party in building a coalition at the next election.

A man builds an IED. He sets it off in a busy public street. Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom. It's a miracle nobody is injured. And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."
It does raise this point of two-tiered
justice..

You were not obliged to do it at all. If you believe there will be a groundswell of support to block Le Pen by voting Melanchon I think you’re deluding yourself. Macron attracted voters from the centre and right, Melanchon won’t.

Phil Bryan @philbryan.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It says nothing about me at all. I don’t live in France. I hate Le Pen. However many on the centre right would rather stay at home than vote for Melanchon and the polling backs this up. I say this as someone doesn’t want a fascist as a neighbouring country.

Don’t understand your logic, a candidate in the centre is far more likely to bring out votes from the left and right and keep the extremists like Le Pen and Melanchon out.

Phil Bryan @philbryan.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It’s not about what you want it’s about supporting a candidate that will appeal to left, right and centre and beat Le Pen. Melenchon will not and never do that and open door to Le Pen. I am saying this from comfortable distance from France.

Melenchon voters need to understand, a vote for Melenchon is a vote for Le Pen every single time. Problem is with Melenchon voters they don’t care at all. This isn’t looking good.
