Mine is a heart of carnelian, crimson as murder on a holy day. Mine is a heart of cornel, the gnarled roots of a dogwood and the bursting of flowers. I am the broken wax seal on my lover’s letters. I am the phoenix, the fiery sun, consuming and resuming myself. Hymn to Sekhmet

In the late 18th century, British imperial expansion fueled an appetite for accounts of distant lands and cross-cultural encounters. Readers eagerly consumed vivid travel narratives, often illustrated with engravings of religious “exoticism.” 🧵 🗃️ 📜 #China
A black-and-white engraved illustration shows a large, bearded humanoid figure seated or standing in the center, surrounded by numerous much smaller people. The figure wears a tall, pointed cap, a broad layered garment decorated with rows of circular trim, and a sunburst-like hem at the bottom. Its face has prominent eyes, a long nose, a mustache, and a full beard. Several curving, handwritten-looking marks appear on the figure’s lower garment. Crowds of robed or formally dressed people fill the sloping terrain on both sides and gather around the figure’s base. Draped fabric or a canopy extends across the upper background, while heavily crosshatched lines create texture throughout the scene.A black-and-white engraved print presents two religious scenes within an ornate rectangular border. A heading appears above the scenes, and explanatory captions are printed below.

In the left panel, a large multi-armed figure identified in the caption as Amida stands on a pedestal. The figure wears a tall pointed headdress, layered robes, necklaces, and a large circular ornament around the lower body. Numerous small worshippers kneel or stand in rows around the figure. Draped fabric hangs overhead, and a large blank rectangular panel and smoking vessels appear near the bottom.

In the right panel, a seated figure identified as Confucius appears on a raised platform, surrounded by several robed attendants or worshippers. The central figure wears a tall, patterned headdress and a sash marked with characters. Hanging panels with vertical inscriptions and small suspended objects fill the background. Several people gather on the stepped platform below, with tall incense burners emitting smoke.

Genuinely off-putting and strange entry for #WeirdWednesday this week. And yes, yet another find over at the BBC Archive channel. Some good old fashioned British passive-aggressiveness aimed, somewhat bizarrely, at a post WW2 austerity middle class who had finally regained their purchasing power.

Katen, the Fire Deity 十二天像 火天図 Hanabusa Itchô latter half of the 17th to first half of the 18th century MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink, color, and gold on paper DIMENSIONS90.1 x 37.1 cm (35 ½ x 14 5/8 in.) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
A roaring aureole of stylized, sweeping flames surges diagonally upward behind the four-armed deity, casting a radiant vermilion glow against the uninked silk ground. Standing barefoot upon a floating lotus pedestal surrounded by swirling crests, Katen—the Fire Deity—is depicted as a stern, bearded ascetic with a third eye set upon his brow. His gaunt, deeply lined torso reveals the stark contours of an ascetic life, draped in flowing celestial scarves (tennei), a fur apron bound at the waist, and patterned robes. In his four hands, he holds his sacred ritual attributes: a crystal rosary (nenju), a triangular vessel of sacred fire held close to his chest, a ritual pitcher (suibin), and a long, slender bamboo staff resting beside his feet.
Painted during the late 17th or early 18th century by the celebrated Edo-period master Hanabusa Itchō (1652–1724), this hanging scroll depicts Katen, the Japanese Buddhist manifestation of Agni, the Vedic god of fire. Within the Esoteric Buddhist (Mikkyō) pantheon, Katen serves as one of the Jūniten (Twelve Devas), protecting the cosmos and specifically guarding the southeast direction. Formally trained in the classical Kano school before developing his own vibrant, humanistic style in Edo, Itchō brought a fresh, expressive vitality to traditional religious iconography. His painterly monozukuri (artisanal mastery) transforms a rigid Esoteric icon into a living, deeply expressive figure, marrying orthodox Buddhist iconometry with the fluid, calligraphic brushwork of the Edo urban renaissance.

Let the Day perish wherein I was Born collections.artsmia.org/art/46428
The seven days of silent mourning are now over and a new cycle begins. Now Job reacts against his woes. His proverbial patience has ended; he ceases to endure passively his misfortunes. His wrath emerges in a turning point of revolution. He no longer sits beneath the stone cross; it is gone forever. Now he questions his situation and the justice of his disasters, and by this questioning eventually finds the true God. Meanwhile the cross stands above his friends, who remain in error. Ultimately, Job comes to the realization that his great wealth never brought him the happiness of security. He questions the former purpose of his whole life. In the margins, clouds release rain drops upon toadstools, briars and thistles.

Painted around 1770 by the iconoclastic master Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781), this hanging scroll detail exemplifies the mid-Edo period's fascination with artistic eccentricity (kiso).
Twisting his contorted torso in a dramatic, theatrical pose, the Daoist immortal Gama Sennin (Liu Haichan) leans with wild, ecstatic energy over his monstrous companion. Executed in ink-drenched brushwork, his dark robes surge around his bare shoulder and torso in turbulent, calligraphic folds. Shōhaku renders the immortal's disheveled hair, bare feet, and manic, wide-eyed gaze with fierce, grotesque intensity as he gestures downward with splayed fingers, cradling a leafy branch laden with the divine peach of immortality. Below, a stout, three-legged toad rears back on its webbed limbs, its bulging eyes locked onto its master in open-mouthed, animated reverence. Soft, atmospheric ink washes and splashed tones (fukuboku) dissolve the surrounding environment, isolating the figures within an ethereal, mist-filled void.

The subject derives from Chinese legends surrounding Liu Haichan, a 10th-century minister and alchemist who achieved Daoist immortality through his friendship with a magical, three-legged toad capable of secreting the elixir of life. In Shōhaku's hands, the benevolent immortal is stripped of tranquil idealization and reinvented as an unruly, manic figure, reflecting the painter's preference for psychological distortion and intense theatricality.

Aesthetically, the work offers a provocative exploration of yūgen—the profound, shadowed mystery that resides within the unorthodox and unfathomable forces of the cosmos. Shōhaku’s explosive, ink-saturated linework manifests a radical dimension of monozukuri (master craftsmanship), where technical discipline yields to raw, spontaneous energy that captures the inner, untamed spirit (ki) of his subjects. The murky, unpainted expanse behind the figures operates as an active field of yohaku (negative space), swallowing the horizon and suspended in an eerie, primordial stillness.
