Brian Blessed’s birthday is an excuse to share one of the greatest paragraphs in any memoir ever.
A paragraph from Brian Blessed’s autobiography:

So the first time I ever came into contact with O'Toole was at one of these student gatherings.
I remember it well because I'd just punched Harold Pinter down a flight of stairs.

So sorry to have siphoned the wrathful spirit of a serial killer from their bitter grave and decanted it through your letterbox, but it just seemed funny at the time I now realise* it wasn’t *I don’t - it was, and continues to be, a source of great amusement

Unwinding to Shostakovich recording the sound of an orchestra being fed feet-first through a meat grinder. Screeching Pterodactyls are caught in the machine’s teeth swooping down to tear at the carcasses. Starving children rattle and scream into opened tin cans filled with stones

I also have a visceral reaction to naturally lit British films shot in rural locations that feel very similar to the ones I grew up in e.g. Witchfinder General/Blood on Satan’s Claw/The Beast in the Cellar/70s Hammer (also the opening scenes in Return to Oz)

On the one hand, Blood and Black Lace (Bava) for the richness of the palette and Argento Suspiria/Deep Red. Also, Don’t Look Now, with its nods to Giallo and The Masque of the Red Death (Roeg as cinematographer) On the other, in stark contrast, The Innocents

Used to adore Brian Sewell’s reviews in the Standard, not least the one on Lloyd Webber’s Pre-Raphaelite collection* in the early-2000s where he bemoaned Rossetti’s obsession with plump lips and what Sewell took to be their association with FELLATIO *which was good but slightly grannyish

Subject: Re: Overdue account
Dear Jane,
I do not have any money so I am sending you this drawing I did of a spider instead. I value the drawing at $233.95 so trust that this settles the matter.
Regards, David
This is followed by a crude drawing of a spider with seven legs and a smiley face

On World Octopus Day remember that an octopus feels pain. Its heart can be broken. All three of them. When an octopus is attacked, and squirts out ink, it writes a poem in the water, and escapes while its attacker is enraptured by the poem’s poignant cry of yearning for lost love.

I'm proud of my three collections of ghost stories and weird fiction, not least because together they've apparently created a sense of what Newmanesque might mean. Get them here: www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Ray-N...
Municipal Gothic (black, yellow, brutalist tower block); Intervals of Darkness (black, red, illustration of a mysterious void); Thin Places in Hard Concrete (pink and pale blue, floating brutalist staircase). There books, 37 stories.

Argento made such delicious looking films that you forgive the iffy plots, dialogue and acting. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage being a case in point
The murderer captures their intended victim, a young woman with a pixie haircut in a striking red coat, in freeze frame All is not as it seems, as our protagonist is trapped between two sets of large windows and watches on helplessly after seeing a woman stabbed in the chest A gorgeous woman admires herself in the mirror, unaware that she’s the killer’s next victim. The ensuing shots where we see her POV through a cigarette is fireA woman viewed from above through a triangular staircase
