Ignorant, cruel, and shortsighted are but a few of the words I have to describe the current administration - they are destroying the fabric of government and who knows what else.

But please dont share this as a mantra for success. If your success comes at the direct expense of your colleagues because they are doing all the work everyone is supposed to share in, it does not make you ‘successful’ it just makes you a horrible colleague. Also see peer review Rant over. For now

We have a guest tonight - Found a lost dog (no collar, not neutered) in our neighborhood. Sheltering him for the night; I feel so bad we can't afford to keep him (Ziggy and Bilbo are already very demanding.) It makes me sad to have to surrender him tomorrow.

I always have fun including the mascot of the school I am giving a talk at because they are usually warm-blooded animals, thus can be infected with Toxoplasma. Today will be an exception: the mascot is a SHARK!

A renewed reminder to anyone applying for a PhD or postdoc position in a lab--indicate your interest in the email/cover letter by talking a bit about that lab's work and why it would be a good fit. I answer any query that includes this information but do not answer those that do not.

Why is there so much toxicity and hate online? It may be because people are seeking social approval from their social networks (not that they directly want to harm the target). Cool paper by Jiang, Luceri, Walther & @emilioferrara.bsky.social doi.org/10.48550/arX...
Fig 1. Illustration of the proposed Social-LLM model for scalable toxicity prediction based on learned user representations.Fig 6. Changes in toxicity when an anchor tweet received lower or higher than the predicted amount of social engagement at different windows k.Fig 7. Having higher amounts of likes and retweets than predicted wold result in the biggest increase in future toxicity, and vice versa. And Figure 7. When an anchor tweet receives substantially lower or higher amount of retweets than expected, the different in maximum toxicity is statistically significant.Fig 9. We display the effect of social engagement on all five toxicity attributes at k = 50.
