Seeing this just fills me with absolute despair at the climate situation. We are still at peak emissions. We haven't even begun decreasing emissions and even if we did, the warming that's baked from past emissions will last for centuries. We're cooked.

Ok wait we’re talking about punctuation marks, not nikud / vowels. Fine. More logical but … the leap from “Hebrew adopted the question mark” to “atrocities!!” Is still bonkers Also the author knows that Yiddish used punctuation, right? Good

I took this to mean nikkud, but you're absolutely right that's not punctuation, that's diacritics. I still assume the intention was nikkud, but this makes it an even odder mistake. Otherwise... commas are genocide? Periods cause apartheid? And semicolons are famed for their human rights abuse 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have so many qs. (ht @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social 1) What brutal colonial system created Hebrew punctuation marks?? The Masoritic scribes ca. 5-10 c. CE? Uh? 2) bb I think you mean the revival of *spoken Modern Hebrew*, since written was always a thing? + www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
"This ambition inevitably leads to overreach. If punctuation played a role in everything, what about, say, the war in Gaza? Hazrat finds a link. “Punctuation marks in Hebrew,” she explains, “are relics of a brutal colonial system that is far from over.” Adding punctuation turned Hebrew into a spoken language, “paving the way for an artificial sense of unity among Jewish people from all over the globe, encouraging them to move to the land that already had people—a people made to suffer and bear the brunt of European anti-Semitism in the most horrendous ways for generations.” It seems (the reason is not altogether clear) that, had Yiddish been the official language of Israel, atrocities might have been avoided."
