There's been a lot of recent praise heaped upon 4907-4917 N Paulina, a new rental building designed by Foster Dale Architects in the style of a classic Chicago courtyard building. But unfortunately it's only a partial recreation of the form, shallower than the real thing with a parking lot out back.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

True. I'd wager most folks don't realize that there are many names for God in Biblical Hebrew. As a second-wave feminist, I was very pleased when I learned that several of God's names were in the feminine gender, somewhat unique, given the patriarchal nature of most religious discourse. #ParshaChat

I’d learned that the Hebrew people were originally more feminist/matriarchal and pivoted towards patriarchal around 2000BC, but we still see echoes of the earlier traditions. #ParshaChat

Even the Tanakh uses more than one name for the deity. English translations are all "God" or "The Lord." But Biblical Hebrew (as you know) refers to God by attributes, by qualities, etc. I'd imagine that people prayed based on their experience of who God was to them. #ParshaChat

When I grew up, I learned it was translated as stewardship. That’s what I taught my children. I’m uncomfortable with “rulership” in a way I’m not with “stewardship.” We have a duty to protect and preserve and guide those we steward. Like David Brin’s beautiful idea of Uplift. #ParshaChat

In the ancient world, to name something is to have power over it. That's why Moses wanted to know what God's name was: in Egyptian mythology, there were family gods, and if you knew their special name, you controlled them. But Moses found out that God could not be controlled. #ParshaChat
