This is becoming an issue with every industry that's sort of low margin now, but it's way too fucking easy for one rich guy who made his money in a different medium to just set up shop and dominate industries that have lots of financial trouble completely, and the reactions are almost equally bad.

this was supposed to be one of the most straight-forwardly successful/profitable AI startups. everyone assumed "charge a monthly fee for digital fren" was a layup. boring, but definitely a thing you could make money at from the public. but, nope.

Character.AI, which was valued at more than $1b in 2023, is bankrupt. CAI's founders once argued that they were building superintelligence. The startup went on to face wrongful death lawsuits, safety concerns, financial struggles, and user-hated platform changes: futurism.com/artificial-i...
Character.AI is a fascinating case study of the early AI era. It was the first company to face allegations of psychological harm and wrongful death to users, claims that other major players in the industry are now battling too. Yet in attempting, eventually, to make its freewheeling platform safer, it also made it unusable and deeply frustrating for much of its userbase — suggesting that the qualities that allegedly made its platform so dangerous to some young users were the same features that made it compelling.

At the same time, despite immense investments, it struggled to do something that, from a business perspective, is pretty important: make money. And unfortunately for the broader AI industry — and the American economy — that specific issue isn’t unique to Character.AI.

It was definitely very well done but did not really tell me anything I didn’t already know. And it makes me wonder who is it for? Are the people who *need* to see this going to see it? If they see it, will they do anything other than say “it’s all lies”

Yes, my dastardly plan to make PCs so expensive that people will be willing to rent time on all the PCs that *I* have, thus meaning people won't own their own computers! Except me. Who has to pay for all the computers. And the bandwidth. And the power. Wait hold on my plan seems very stupid.

whenever trump's DOJ has to go in front of a judge to get yelled at, every lawyer on here is like "omg i've NEVER seen a judge this mad, if a judge yelled at me like this i'd immediately commit seppeku," and then at the end of the hearing the judge is like "ok no sanctions just don't do it again"

I think the other thing this guy doesn't understand is I'm not looking for an infinite scroll of algorithmically-curated content. I want a reverse-chronological feed of the accounts I follow, and Bluesky and Mastodon are the only places to get that now.

He continued: “How do you survive AI? Amazon is a very AI friendly company to the tune of 50 billion dollars invested to OpenAI. I am not an AI friendly actor. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. It’s kind of like I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again. But that’s OK. So I got to get with these young directors who are Gen Z and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is. They’re doing it from scratch and by hand. I want to get with that.”

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

even if it does "work", if you've ever looked at LLM-produced codebases you will know that they are not human-maintainable. so congratulations, Anthropic owns your codebase now, and they can charge you whatever they want. not a great business move imo but what do I know, I don't have an MBA.

get a few minutes into a conversation with anyone using LLMs to write code and they will eventually admit they have no idea what's going on in there. but hey, it "works"!! 👍

the only way LLMs make coding faster is if you don't review the code, which: 🙃
