I was curious what share of new randomized trials are focused on AI: it was 2% four years ago; now it’s 16%. Nearly 40% of these are about education. Source: I had Claude download the registry and label RCTs. All unverified, so take it with a grain of salt.

The 2025 American Community Survey should have come out today. But it has been delayed because of unusual political encroachment at Census. ACS drives business and policy decisions, especially in local communities, and is the primary input to Census’s immigration estimates.

There might be weighting to adjust for partisan bias in each poll as well? Not sure about this methodology but I presume the modeling is doing some of that work.

🚨New working paper alert!🚨 Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have grown rapidly. Who uses them? Do they improve kids' skills? BU econ PhD student Samuel Nitkin and I provide answers in: "Kumon Up: Private Tutoring Centers and Student Achievement" www.nber.org/papers/w35671 1/?
Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have expanded rapidly in recent decades.
Combining data on business locations, household spending, and district test scores, we study who
uses these centers and how they affect academic skills. Nearly half of tutoring users are from the top
income decile, with Asian and White households five and two times as likely to purchase tutoring as
Black and Hispanic households. A staggered differences-in-differences design shows the opening
of a district's first chain center raises district-wide math and reading scores by 0.02-0.03 standard
deviations, at a much lower cost than public spending typically producing similar gains. Math
effects are largest for White and Asian students, so that center entry widens racial achievement
gaps, though less so in more racially integrated districts. These private investments help their
users, deepen educational inequality, and shape outcomes by which state accountability systems
and families judge schools.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be snarky, but sometimes I think the public-facing debate gets distilled to: RCTs are the gold standard and observational studies provide external validity, when the reality, as you imply above, is usually messier.
030
Peter Bergman @peterbergman.bsky.social · 02/07/2026
Often when you introduce identifying assumptions, observational studies suffer from this as well. I don’t disagree with the limitations of an RCT, but the idea that observational studies can be better for external validity is usually not without its own strong assumptions.

True. We’ll do that. It’s not hard to look at selection around a one-sided test. (We did 1.64 too.) Adding steps is asking a lot of the data, however (not that you were asking about this). In the end, we’re less wed to the specific results than exploring the approach(es). Thanks for suggesting.

Thank you @jepusto.bsky.social ! Good question. We have been addressing this in a couple of ways. One way is we recorded which outcome we think is primary in the study. The other is reweighting so that each study contributes the same weight. We’ll do an update of the paper to show how results vary.
