A figure stands in a barren landscape; reaches for the lever on a large, eccentric contraption covered in wires, pipes, dials and buttons; looks over towards two figures inside a bunker and says:

"'Trust me, it's safe' would sound a lot more reassuring if you weren't saying it from inside a concrete bunker."

In Bathers (1921), Magritte filters the Cubist tradition through the Cubo-Futurist style he developed with Servranckx. Painted during his military service near Leopoldsburg, the work uses analytical precision to dissolve bodies into geometric planes. #artbots #magritte

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

Youth (1924) marks the close of Magritte’s Cubist phase. By then, he was also working for the Norine fashion house, whose co-owner, P.-G. Van Hecke, was an early champion of Surrealism. At 25, Magritte stood on the threshold of a new artistic identity. #artbots #magritte

Consider Curnoe’s The Camouflaged Piano or French Roundels (1965–66). “… a juxtaposition, without logical order, of things and events that preoccupy me.”
Image of the mixed media assemblage The Camouflaged Piano or French Roundels by Greg Curnoe (1936–1992); combining painting, stamped text, and found objects; undulating bands of colour reflect the raucous rhythms of a band while stamped words refer to music, flying aces, and struggles for national liberation.
The musicians are friends of the artist, Peter Denney (1934–2024) and Alex Kelly, while the figure on the right is the sculptor Robert Murray. It is not entirely clear why Murray is depicted in a Dick Tracy-esque, comic-strip style, nor indeed what his role is in the work, since the two men had not yet met. The hotel sign encrusted with pigeon droppings and decorated with six light bulbs, salvaged from the Richmond Hotel in London, ON, evokes that city’s York Hotel, where Curnoe and his Nihilist Spasm Band companions performed every Monday night for years.
The British airship R.34, the first to cross the Atlantic non-stop, floats above the piano. Only the tail of the German airship Hindenburg is visible, plunging out of the frame at the bottom, likely an allusion to its final, catastrophic flight in 1937. The snippets of text along the four edges fail to explain the title. Even though there is indeed a camouflaged piano, the dirigible's roundels are British, not French (the three circles of the French roundel bear the same colors – blue, white, and red – but in reverse order).
The assemblage combines Curnoe’s passion for text, colour, jazz, aviation, war, and art. It envelops the viewer with its dazzling, vibrant colours and considerable size, bringing together a number of elements jostling for space that were the artist’s hallmarks.
