“Yours or ours?”
“It can easily be both, can’t it? I am sure you didn’t expect us to take your story at face value. But it is being taken seriously. As proof, the royal advisor will be here shortly. In the meantime, you will be taken to the camp and supervised until a determination has been made. I trust this will be satisfactory?”
“I assume it will have to be.” Fox handed over her knife, which was currently her only weapon. Av’ry followed suit.
“Thank you for your cooperation.” The captain nodded.
They mounted and followed their escort back towards the camp.
Av’ry leaned closer to her. “They only sent 7 people, and they took your knife?” He wisely avoided explaining why he was incredulous about that.
“Come on, Ave. Miki is smart enough not to volunteer any… unnecessary information.”
“Oh.” He considered that for a moment and cast a furtive glance at the soldiers around them.
“No need for us to volunteer it either.” Truthfully, she preferred people not know what she was, for more reasons than one. “Right?”

I have to admit I picked this snippet because it has tales of The Complex from before the start of the series. A little chat between Charlie and Kit about Charlie's first trip into the village he now lives in. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity *clipped alt text says - ‘Well, it worked.’

‘I went into the village today, just for a short walk I promise. Looked round the shops and bought myself a salad for lunch.’
‘Everything ok?’
‘Yep. It was really nice to be out and see actual people just peopling. I said I was staying with Doctor Kit when a couple of people asked. I didn’t know what you’d want me to say.’
‘You can tell people you live here. Call me your partner, boyfriend, tell them I’m your Dom and I own your ass. Your call.’
‘Not sure that would suit the Doctor Kit the Amazing, image.’
‘You exaggerate.’
‘I don’t. It’s not just you though. Everyone loves the Complex lot, like loves them.’
‘You’re surprised?’
‘A little. It’s a tiny village with a lot of older residents, and apparently every single one of them adores the “Queer family up the hill”.’
‘Did anyone tell you why?’
‘The lady in the bakery said, “Do anything for anyone, that lot”. So, I guess that’s it.’
‘Not long after Tank and Gigi opened The Complex, a post van’s brakes let go on a corner and took out half of an old lady’s front garden. Later that morning, without a word to anyone, five large gay bikers turned up, with Mama leading the way. They built her a new wall, replanted for her, and did all her odd jobs and a load for her neighbours. The Complex keeps the cab firms in business, and two B and Bs. And no one causes trouble or they have to deal with Tank, or Mama.’
‘I’d rather take angry Tank than angry Mama.’
‘Most people would to be fair.’
‘Who were the five bikers?’
‘Tank, Benji, me, Damon, and Wolf. I think I still had my L-plates on. Steel sourced all the plants while we cleared up, then came and helped with the planting. He’s still got a few customers in the village. It’s more than that though. When the council condemned the scout hut, Dad and Gigi sorted out the community hall for all the local groups to use. They donate to the school, and to community projects, including protecting some land from developers. They’ve worked really hard to become valued in the community.’

#SFFChat Q4 took a minute to find a snip that wasn't entirely context-less, alas it happens at the END of the book

A sharp crack sounded and sweet, thick air rushed back into Sam’s lungs. Gasping for the first time in weeks, Sam was suffocated by dust clouds kicked up by their reemergence into reality. Long strands of red hair brushed over his lips as the Fairy held him down.
Not that he was going anywhere anytime soon. Nausea of a new persuasion kept him plastered to the ground. Pink flames licked the now half-collapsed theater, smoke billowing into the darkness beyond.
And there, hung from the collapsed roof was a great glowing light, its eye focused on him. An eight-legged semi-organic machine propped on delicate feet over the ruined theater. It dripped, jittered, and flickered.
Not quite real. Not quite unreal.
A horrific mix of all that was and all that could never be.
And it spoke, “Please remain calm—”

#SFFChat 2 100% I was inspired by the big mechanical spider in Wild Wild West and the crystalization in Atlantis the Lost Empire; but in a way King Midas and the story of Athena and Arachne. I wanted a big mechanical monster and as a professional Arachnophobe spider shapes were perfect.

In the hearth, steam rose up from the surface of the bubbling stew, its aroma filling the cozy, little hut with the scent of garden vegetables. Sadie started to feel her mouth water.
“What did you put in it?” Sadie asked, looking up at Rocky bustling about the room.
“Oh, this and that,” Rocky replied. “Used up some of those really big carrots!” Sadie laughed.
“The ones that looked like curvy, naked ladies?” she snickered. Rocky's lips curved in a smile that cracked his rough features.
“And the ones that looked like curvy, naked gentlemen,” he added sardonically.
Rocky walked over to the table and set the stew pot down on its worn, wooden surface with a loud thunk. Sadie started to hungrily reach her hand towards it.
“Wait!” Rocky shouted suddenly, interrupting her with his anxious tone.
“What? What is it?” Sadie stuttered, pulling her hand back away.
“It's hot,” he replied simply in a calmer register, adjusting the stew pot with oven-mitted hands.
“Oh, thank you,” Sadie said. A feeling of relief flooded her.
