Since The People's Letters opened our doors, we've been committed to running an ethical worker co-operative that supports our local community as a hub for mutual aid.
Projects like ours function surrounded by doubt and people insisting that we cannot possibly survive without resorting to hierarchical structures and small business owner mindsets. We refuse. If we cannot run a shop that also serves as a free community living room, provides a sliding scale to enable unfunded/grassroots groups to organise, and prioritises marginalised voices... then we would not want to run it at all.
Your support is the reason we're able to keep doing this work, and we cannot thank you enough for making this possible!

From the moment we opened, our wages have taken a back seat. We split the money that is left after rent, stock orders, royalties to artists, and keeping our free tea and coffee station topped up.
It is exhausting and rewarding in equal measure to run this shop. All the time we can dedicate goes into making it better, more effective, and sharing the love amongst more groups committed to that same mission. Fundraising bridges the gap between our lower earnings because of this commitment and the amount needed so that our workers can make rent and afford food and baby formula.

Thanks to the incredible outpouring of community support, we've raised almost £5k for our Crowdfunder so far! This covers our immediate running costs so The People's Letters can stay afloat for now. You made sure we didn't lose another beloved community space, and we cannot be more grateful for your support.

But we don't just want TPL to scrape by. We want to build real sustainability and capacity while practising radical politics without compromise. That's why we have extended the Crowdfunder till end of March, to hopefully bring us to our 10k goal.

We started this workers' co-op without a financial cushion and moved straight from a labour dispute into building this space from the ground up, learning as we go and slowly finding our footing.
Despite all the difficulties, we are still committed to practising radical politics in action. Since October 2025, we have been open every single day from 11 am to 7 pm, including Christmas and New Year's. We operate on a pay-what-you-can model for secondhand books and event tickets; offer our event space for free or at low cost to unfunded groups, SWers, trans and anti-fascist groups. We make sure no one is turned away for lack of funds, and that people can come in, read, collect supplies, chat, or hang out with friends without feeling the pressure to buy anything.
