Rather than putting weapons into orbit, we need serious participation in international talks to prevent an arms race in space. #KeepSpaceForPeace Read the statement: cnduk.org/us-space-weapons-deployme…
US space weapons deployment will spark international arms race in space The US has confirmed that it has deployed space weapons in Earth’s orbit. The stationing of space weapons will spark an international arms race in space. Russia, China and possibly India, are very likely to adopt similar systems – if they have not done so already. Such weapons could be kinetic (hit-to-kill missiles) or non-kinetic (including lasers to temporarily ‘blind’ satellites and jammers that can disable communications between satellites and on the ground) and employed for offensive and defensive purposes. A major concern is that, if an early warning satellite were to be disabled by a technical problem or impact with a meteorite, it may be interpreted as a strike by an anti-satellite weapon and could initiate a nuclear war. This announcement could be an indication that the US is preparing to site interceptor missiles in Earth’s orbit as part of Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ project. The Golden Dome – or Missile Defence System – is designed to enable the US to launch a nuclear attack without fear of retaliation. This is a key driver to the new nuclear arms race. The development of the Golden Dome will include the involvement of US bases in Britain such as Fylingdales, Menwith Hill and the DARC (Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability) proposed for Pembrokeshire. In April, the US Space Force awarded BAE Systems $11.8 million to demonstrate satellite-to-satellite communications for the Golden Dome. The US announcement was followed by the publication of the government’s updated UK Space Strategy which states that Britain will continue to cooperate with the US across the space domain, assisting the US Space Command’s aim to ‘dominate space’ through ‘full spectrum dominance’. The government plans to spend £7.8 billion on space until 2030. Such attempts to dominate space breach the 1967 Outer Space Treaty which states that ‘the exploration and use of outer space shall The US spends about $80 billion a year on global space developments, four times more than China at about $19 billion per year, while Russia plans to spend an average of $6 billion for the next 10 years whilst Britain has committed £1.3 billion annually on space over the next six years. Rather than stationing weapons in space the US and Britain should seriously participate in international talks to prevent an arms race in space, demilitarise the space domain and work towards cooperation and sharing rather than duplicating space resources for the good of all, rather than to profit the few.

"The most effective way to ensure Iran remains within the NPT is for the US and Israel to end the illegal war on that country." CND statement on Iran's possible withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. #NPT Read: cnduk.org/us-illegal-war-driving-ir…
US illegal war driving Iran’s vote to withdraw from NPT Reports indicate that the Iranian parliament plans to vote on whether to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This would be a significant setback for nuclear non-proliferation in the region. CND has repeatedly raised concerns that the US/Israeli illegal and unprovoked war on Iran – including the bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities – would risk Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT. The US and Israel have continually sabotaged diplomatic efforts to resolve concerns around Iran’s nuclear programme. In 2025, as talks continued between the US and Iran, Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, in breach of the UN Charter and the International Atomic Energy Agency statute. In response Iran announced that it would reduce cooperation with the IAEA and that its parliament was working on legislation to withdraw Iran from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).In February this year, despite talks securing significant progress – including Iran’s agreement to dilute its enriched uranium stockpile - the US and Israel yet again sabotaged this progress. The illegal bombardment of Iran has killed thousands of civilians through targeted bombing of residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Such sabotage is not new, including Trump’s withdrawal from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Despite the ongoing illegal war on Iran, in September, Britain, France, Germany and the US submitted a resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency calling for Iran to be reported to the UN Security Council for non-compliance of its safeguarding commitments and not facilitating IAEA inspections. This motion was carried with 23 votes in favour, three votes against and eight abstentions. This is just the latest example of the outrageous nuclear hypocrisy in which nuclear-armed Israel has received no international condemnation or sanctions, despite its refusal to acknowledge its nuclear weapons programme or agree to inspections of its nuclear facilities. Britain has now expanded sanctions again against Iran, imposing new financial, trade and transport restrictions on the country. This will further worsen the living conditions for the Iranian people. The most effective way to ensure Iran remains within the NPT is for the US and Israel to end the illegal war on that country. The US must engage in a diplomatic route to resolve the crisis. The British government should be using its diplomatic influence to lobby the US and Israel to attend the UN conferences to secure a Treaty for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.

CND statement marking five years of the #AUKUS Treaty. We stand in solidarity with the Australian peace and trade union movement, unified in our opposition to this treaty and our call for the programme to be scrapped.
5 YEARS OF THE AUKUS TREATY IT’S TIME TO PULL THE PLUG. Today marks five years since the British government signed the AUKUS Treaty with US and Australia. This Treaty includes Britain building conventionally armed, nuclear-powered attack submarines for Australia, which would make this country the first non-nuclear weapons state to deploy them. This Treaty is increasing tensions across the Asia-Pacific region, including the risks of nuclear confrontation. It is in breach of the nuclear Non-Proliferations Treaty and drives nuclear proliferation. Upon the announcement of the Strategic Defence Review in 2025, the government said they would build as many as 12 submarines at the BAE Shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness as part of AUKUS, promising it would “transform the UK’s submarine building industry.”However, the AUKUS anniversary comes amid reports that the current government has now rolled back on making any orders for new nuclear-powered attack submarines until 2028, raising doubt over whether Barrow or the government is able to deliver the AUKUS submarines under the terms of the Treaty. Yet the Australian people are still having to foot the bill - a colossal AUS$368 billion over the thirty-year lifetime of the submarines. This a totally unacceptable economic burden on the Australian population for a military system which will not keep them safe, but, on the contrary, make them a target in any military confrontation between the US and China. CND stands in solidarity with the Australian peace and trade union movement, unified in our opposition to this treaty and our call for the programme to be scrapped. Instead of fuelling nuclear proliferation and tensions in Asia, we need an end to military escalation and nuclear threats. This can be done with a clear focus on strengthening global cooperation so we can tackle the real security threats we face like climate change and the looming economic recession caused by the US/Israeli illegal war on Iran. Governments across the world have shown it is possible to come together to develop nuclear-free zones: they exist in the South Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Africa. This cooperation is going a step further with the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). It is the direction demanded by the global majority, not a new nuclear arms race.

What alternatives can we fund by scrapping Britain’s nukes? ㅤ CND's new #PeopleNotNukes campaign shows that by halting the replacement of Britain’s nuclear weapons, the government could release £240 billion of public funds into the economy over the next 30 years. #TUC26 Some examples 👇
