I just found out you were doing this again so I am jumping in late! This time I want to talk about Orion. It's a conlang I created for a friend's Star Trek fanfic, when I discovered that Orions do not have an official conlang. I analyzed the small amount of extant text, and the rest is mine.

Orion is the language of an ancient empire which has since collapsed. As a result, its vocabulary and grammar (like English) are a blend of different origins. There are two ways of conjugating verbs, which are used in tandem, and two kinds of nouns, one of which has gender while the other doesn't.

Sheila Jenné @jennelikejennay.bsky.social · 7h
I had a lot of fun with this idea when making Orion. The sentence order tells you some things about the meaning. S O Hv V — this happened Hv V S O — did this happen? (you see we do this in English too!) Hv S O V — it could've happened (but it didn't)

Every month or so I seem to get another email from a class action settlement, letting me know my data has been compromised or otherwise misused, and I may be entitled to a whole five ($5.00) US dollars. Just doesn't seem like the sign of a healthy society, when it keeps happening again and again.

I just heard they're planning to make another reboot Star Trek movie that's gritty and dark. I know utopia is out of style, but it's very much Star Trek's ENTIRE THING. Without the hopepunk of it all, it's not Star Trek! It says so much about our age that we can't even imagine a hopeful future.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but a woman character in a book being masculine is not the "Not Like Other Girls" trope. NLOG is when she is masculine coded AND she hates feminine women, because she is on the team of the (sexist) men within and outside of the book.

This essay blew my mind. www.patreon.com/therisingtit...
The short version, I think, is that no one is ever actually reading Black work, or any work from marginalised writers for that matter. I think that it is often far more valuable to some parts of publishing to sell what a work signals about the identity of its characters or author than it is to sell the work itself. Then, in the rare instances when it is willing to bet on marginalised writers, it does so not because it is genuinely curious about that specific author's given imagination or craft, but because it believes there is something strong in that signal that will do the double work of drawing eyes to the radical text they have chosen, and therefore confirm that they are the place to go to find radical texts, because they too are doing important work.

I have been reading so much historical gay romance on Kobo Plus lately. I love it, but I'm picky about it. I don't want Gay Bridgerton. I want well researched stuff that reflects *actual* queer customs of the past, with characters who genuinely feel of their time.

Something that's essential to character writing: that they should have consistent opinions of their own, rather than simply parroting your opinions. Maybe you have a point to make. But if you want your character to make that point for you, you have to consider why THEY would think that.

I do highly recommend Kobo Plus, especially if you read a lot of indie books! For 8 bucks a month you read as many as you want. I read like 20 last month so it definitely paid off for me, and meanwhile the author gets paid for the minutes you spend reading.
