Discovered a large cache of photos from high school and I want to share my beautiful early-2000s workstation. Truly the pinnacle of home electronics.
A photo of a 2000s desktop workstation with CRT monitor, a rack of CDs, printer and scanner, laptop, CD player, and lava lamp. Poster of an early 2000s BMW M3.

I understand it’s because Hollywood increasingly values global hits and international revenue (among other industry shifts) but man, hard not to feel like we forgot how to laugh.

It’s cool that the box office is having a good year, but we clearly don’t make the same kinds of movies we used to. The only movies still made for theaters are 1) superhero/action blockbuster, 2) prestige Oscar bait, and 3) horror. Seemingly extinct are comedies, including romcoms.

I’m happy Kurtzman brought Trek back to film and TV, but I’m so weary of his particular interpretation of Trek - needless, forced action sequences and maudlin characters. I hope if Trek continues they’ll make a 90s-style show with the cold professionals I grew up with!

Caught up with Strange New Worlds which remains the best of the “nu Trek” shows by a mile. The ghost ship and badmiral episodes were the standouts (I love a good badmiral). Don’t mind a comedy episode but there were two too many for this 10-episode season.

Recently visited Tashkent Supermarket on Waverly and 6th. Not only an astounding selection of products from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus but one of the most insane food bars I’ve ever seen. And a smoked fish selection that competes with Russ & Daughters. Gonna be visiting this place regularly.

The thing about running on culture war is that they’re single-use only. Each issue can only be deployed once (e.g., CRT). Dishonesty and wickedness aside, running on “trans kids” for a second cycle in a row is like eating your own shit.

LOST was the single show that gave me the most pleasure to watch in my life. I also am depressed by the mindset that a show's finale constitutes the final-exam grade determining its value--which Lost may bear some responsibility for, but which is an impoverished way to look at art

Completely agree, and I think the reason a lot of new buildings have huge ground floor retail space is because the owners want to sign a Target or similar national chain that can commit to a 10-year lease.

Wife is watching Buffy and there’s an episode where a demon possesses the school computer system and manipulates the computer nerds driving them to psychopathy. Giles espouses the value of books and analogue learning after someone basically tells him to adapt or get left behind. Eerily prescient!!

Compare to Batman, for example, who has one of the coolest rogue’s galleries, most of whom are also non-superpowered and are legitimate threats.

I like the concept of Spider-Man but for Marvel’s most popular hero he has the dumbest villains. Watch out, it’s the Octopus Man! And the Scorpion Man! And the Lizard Man, and the Rhino Man! Don’t forget the Vulture Man! Most of them are non-threatening comic goons to boot.

President Coin: “ok hear me out, just spitballing, what if… we did *another* hunger games. I am a tactical genius” This also has to be one of the biggest deltas in on-screen talent and use of that talent.

On a whim we watched all the Hunger Games movies over the weekend. I have nothing against the franchise. First movie at least has a vision and a tight story, but it’s increasingly larger leaps in logic after that.

Wife and I have been rewatching Heroes (season 1 obviously) and honestly, still holds up! Can’t put my finger on why but this *feels* like a network show. It’s not the commercial breaks or 24 episode season. Something about the dialogue, composition, and style that makes it a product of its time.

I think one of the reasons we’re in our current state is because we never really got closure for 9/11. The Middle East wars were ostensibly launched in pursuit of closure, but they went on long enough that people became fatigued and moved on to other issues esp post-Crisis. The wound is still there.

A Labor Day reminder: having a job is no longer enough to protect millions of Americans from homelessness. For many workers, the greatest threat isn't losing their job. It's that their job will never pay enough, never provide enough hours, never offer enough stability to keep them housed.

The Secret of My Success (1987) - Less a movie than a hodgepodge of 80s tropes. Gross treatment of female characters even by the standards of the time. MJF is at least charming but this is an easy skip.
