"Ripping out these protected bike lanes against the will of Toronto city council is a colossal waste of $48 million. The province’s own experts know it will not ease traffic congestion, it will put people’s lives at risk…” One of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen any politician do to any city.

Edmonton has been a shining star among Canadian cities when it comes to progressive housing policy and outcomes - ie, more housing starts! The rollback is a huge step backwards for Alberta, and sadly will influence the housing debate in other provinces too. edmontonjournal.com/news/edmonto...

In @thestar.com I write about agitslop seeping into Toronto’s election & politics. AstroTurf campaigns to AI-driven apps, we need a Blade Runner to help us understand what’s real & what’s fake, but it may inspire a renaissance of showing up in public space for protest or just conversation.

Shawn Micallef: AI slop is turning Toronto politics into a sci-fi dystopia, but it’s not too late to change course
The line between real and fake is blurring and it should be a cautionary tale for voters and candidates

It's also not great that the police seem to have no interest in deescalating something like this. The guy was holding pamphlets and wearing a campaign shirt and their only thought was "body search with guns drawn?"

To all my Ontario friends who haven't yet read the WhatsApp chat between the Ontario Big City Mayors, here are the highlights. From complaining about how they count housing starts to Cam Guthrie doing God's work with zoning, to complaining about DCs, it really hits all the bingo squares.
Chat transcript from October 27, 2023, discussing Ontario housing fund allocation criteria. Participants debate whether municipalities should qualify based on building permits approved versus housing starts, and note discrepancies in unit counting methodology between municipalities.Chat conversation from March 21, 2024, discussing a provincial announcement about four-unit housing policy. Participants reference confusion about whether the policy applies to 4-unit buildings or 4-6 storey buildings in neighborhoods, and share a YouTube link to clarify the announcement.Chat messages from August 18, 2024, discussing property tax implications and development charge costs. Topics include Ontario government property tax increases, a condo DC cost example in Oakville, and debate about mechanisms to ensure development charge reductions translate to affordable housing prices.Chat transcript from November-December 2024, discussing revenue shortfalls and property tax increases. Includes discussion of municipal development charge policy changes, statutory exemptions affecting Toronto's budget, and concerns about passing costs to taxpayers and homebuyers.

Reminds me of the Hallam residents who were SO angry about losing "their" street parking directly in front of their house (lots on the other side), despite having a driveway & double garage. They said it was too hard to turn their heads & reverse in/out of their driveway. You shouldn't be driving.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Great column. It really is the most transparent level of gov't (police notwithstanding). Things are tight. I often get comments like "city hall is corrupt" - well, show me where? It has the most openness, the most public eyes on it. Other levels, far less transparency (looking at you, Ontario)
