This week it’s the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon. And yes, every entrant gets a Wizz Air voucher worth €20! This blatant use of running to promote flying is sportswashing. At a time when we desperately need to be reducing emissions, we don’t need our sport propping up polluting businesses.

This meisen silk kimono features dramatic vertical stripes created through a sophisticated interplay of jagged, flame-like motifs in deep charcoal black against a cream ground, punctuated by sinuous serpentine lines in burnt orange and olive green. The organic, undulating forms create a sense of movement and energy that flows across the entire garment, with the irregular edges of the black sections suggesting natural phenomena like smoke, water, or geological formations.

The aesthetic reflects the influence of mid-century modernist design movements that were reshaping visual culture globally during this period. The abstract, non-representational approach marks a significant departure from traditional Japanese textile motifs, embracing instead the international language of modernism with its emphasis on pure form, color relationships, and dynamic composition. The meisen technique, with its capacity for sharp graphic effects and vibrant color contrasts, proved particularly well-suited to this kind of contemporary artistic expression.

This design speaks to Japan's cultural transformation during the 1950s, when the country was rapidly modernizing and engaging with international artistic trends while maintaining its distinctive aesthetic sensibility. The kimono represents a fascinating synthesis of traditional Japanese garment construction with cutting-edge visual design that could easily be at home in contemporary abstract art galleries. The bold graphic quality and energetic patterning reflect the optimism and forward-looking spirit of Japan's post-war reconstruction period, when artists and designers were enthusiastically exploring new forms of creative expression.

Every member is allowed to express their own view on any policy, provided that they also point out what the policy is. The way to get policy through that doesn't trigger a broad response of this type is to build consensus within the party first. This motion's proposers have not done that.

This statement does a good job of setting out why the Zionism Is Racism motion is a grave misstep by the party. While the motion's intention is unarguable, the framing and the political context mean it hinders rather than advances the party's efforts to seek justice for the Palestinian people.

I am very saddened that Zionism is Racism motion has passed. I was on the list as the next speaker against the motion, but was not called. I wrote two different speeches depending on whether the amendment protecting Jewish members was passed. Here they are below:
If A3 fails:
Joshua Alston, Leeds Green Party, I am a Jewish antizionist.
I joined Jewish Greens in 2018 because of an incident in my local party. Four members of my local party signed a letter accusing me of being a Zionist and a mossad agent because of a position I took in defence of trans rights. It was nothing to do with Israel.
They assumed I was a Zionist because I was a Jew who disagreed with them. I’ve been called a Zionist dozens of time since then.
As an antizionist Jew I have to fight twice as hard, be twice as loud and obnoxious to be persuade people that I am an anti-Zionist and for some people it just isn’t enough.
For non-Jews this isn’t a question that gets asked. If you search Zack Polanski is a Zionist you get loads of hits. No-one says Mothin or Rachel are Zionists.
So I am worried about this motion. I don’t think anti-Zionism is racism. I am an anti-Zionist. But I do think there’s a double standard in society.
Some people say Zionist when they mean Jew.
I know the proposers and trust that they don’t think like this. But most of the rest of the country won’t trust them. They will think awful things of us.
There is another way. We could declare that anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia are racisms. We vote for E03 and focus on the material changes that we need for Palestinian freedom. We can focus on stopping the genocide. We can focus on BDS. We can stand up against the proscription of Palestine action.
The Green Party vision is a world where all are free. This takes us backwards. We should vote it down.
If A3 does pass:
Josh Alston. I’m from Leeds Green Party. I am a Jewish anti-Zionist who has spent most of my adult life talking to the Jewish community about Israel, and helping build coalitions for Palestinian liberation.
In my community 64% of people describe themselves as Zionists, but only 12% are pro-Netanyahu. They have criticisms of Israeli racism, but they still call themselves Zionists.
So what do they think?
They like the idea of a place Jews can go in the event of a genocide in Europe, but don’t like the way Israel treats Palestinians. I see this as an opportunity. We’re a party about organising. We’re a party about convincing people.
So how do we talk people round?
Any organiser knows we start from points of connection and the material conditions in Palestine. We start from disgust at the genocide. We talk about settlements. We talk about BDS. We talk about corruption. We talk about apartheid. We talk about Israel’s connection with the far-right. We talk about impunity. We talk about how we can make Jews safe without an ethnostate.
If we start by calling them racist, we will lose those people and they won’t come back.
There are real stakes here. We’ve seen a genocide live streamed in front of eyes. With this profound evil, if someone thinks that the idea of a Zionism, the idea of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine can be separated from the reality of Israel’s as a state I .think they are wrong. But that’s not the most important question for the Green Party.
The question is ‘what are you going to do to stop the genocide and make Palestine free?’
Let’s organise not exclude and build a coalition for a free Palestine. Thank you.

In addition, I think (and have said before) - that GPEW passing a motion that defines Zionism in a way that is opposed by its own group representing Jewish members is hugely problematic and in opposition to its principle of "nothing about us without us".

I wanted to speak on an amendment to motion EO2 Zionism is racism at Green Party conference today, but was not called on. I’ve copied over what I would have said in the next posts. I was heartbroken this amendment fell and that the vote went against providing this protection for Jewish members.
Text of amendment 3 to motion EO2 Zionism is racism

Safeguarding Jewish party membership

This amendment is to mitigate the possiblity that this motion could be used to achive indirect discrimination against practising Jews

Add after actions 2. ADD

This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members such as (such as support for a binational state, or two state solution).

This elegant kurotomesode features gracefully cascading wisteria motifs rendered in yuzen dyeing technique, with drooping clusters of flowers in soft coral, white, and pale pink tones against the dramatic black kinsha crepe ground. The delicate green foliage and sinuous vine tendrils create flowing vertical lines that emphasize the garment's elegant proportions while adding movement and organic rhythm to the composition.

The wisteria motif carries deep symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, representing beauty, love, and the ephemeral nature of life, making it particularly appropriate for formal occasions where kurotomesode are worn by married women. The artistic treatment reflects the influence of classical Japanese screen painting traditions, where seasonal flowers are depicted with both naturalistic detail and decorative stylization. The strategic placement of the motifs around the hem creates a sense of the flowering vines hanging naturally, as if the wearer is walking through a wisteria garden in late spring. The choice of kinsha crepe as the base fabric adds subtle texture that enhances the lustrous quality of the yuzen-painted surfaces, while the formal black ground provides the dignified restraint appropriate to the garment's ceremonial function.

Better cities provide more choices, and work better for EVERYONE. Bad cities offer only dependency. #CarDependency
