Cultural property and places of worship are not a target. International humanitarian law is clear: Even during wars, museums, libraries, places of worship, archaeological sites, and historic monuments are protected.

Faster decisions in war do not always mean safer outcomes for civilians. As AI is increasingly used in military operations, it can raise serious risks when life-or-death decisions depend on systems that may be unpredictable, biased, or difficult to control. Read more: ms.spr.ly/63325aPl6B
Why are we concerned about the use of AI in the military domain? AI systems should support human decision-making, rather than impair or replace it, as they could accelerate the pace and scale of warfare, increase unpredictability and reduce human control over the use of force, creating serious risks for civilians. Human judgement is essential to ensuring compliance with the rules of war and protecting civilians.

In armed conflict, hunger should never become a weapon. Protecting the resources people depend on and ensuring humanitarian relief can reach those in need are essential to preventing food insecurity from deepening into a humanitarian crisis.
Food, crops, livestock, drinking water, and irrigation systems essential to civilian survival are specifically protected and must not be attacked, destroyed, or rendered useless. Picture: Congolese refugees trade goods at the Busuma camp market, Burundi. ©Hugh Kinsella Cunningham for ICRC

On June 24th 1859, Henry Dunant saw the horrors of the Battle of Solferino. This inspired him to propose a treaty for armies to care for wounded soldiers & create national societies to support military medical services. In 1863, he co-founded the ICRC. Read more: ms.spr.ly/63324voUr2
On 24 June 1859, Henry Dunant witnessed the horrors of the Battle of Solferino in Italy. Thousands of wounded soldiers were left without adequate care. Dunant helped organize relief for them and later wrote "A Memory of Solferino", calling for better care for wounded soldiers and national relief societies to support military medical services in wartime. In 1863, he became one of the five members of the committee that would later become the ICRC. More than 160 years later, Solferino still reminds us: even in war, humanity must be protected.

Civilians remain protected at all times: it doesn’t matter if they stay or if they leave. International humanitarian law prohibits ordering civilians to leave their homes, with narrow exceptions for their safety or military necessity. Learn more: ms.spr.ly/63325vdWDz
International humanitarian law (IHL) prohibits ordering civilians to leave their homes, with narrow exceptions for their safety or military necessity. When civilians are displaced for any reason, IHL requires the party to do everything possible to ensure that they are received under satisfactory conditions of shelter, hygiene, health, safety and nutrition and that members of the same family are not separated. In armed conflicts, civilians remain protected at all times: it doesn’t matter if they stay or if they leave.

In armed conflicts, access to food is often disrupted, leaving millions facing hunger. Crops, livestock, and water sources are destroyed, and food aid struggles to reach those in need. Access to food should not be a luxury.

On this 8 May, we call on all those with influence and responsibility to uphold the protections that civilians, medical personnel, humanitarian workers and communities depend on. Respect for the emblems, for humanitarian rules and principles, is therefore essential. Today, we also say to colleagues across our Movement: we see you, we thank you and we stand with you. At a time when division, violence and disregard for human suffering are testing the limits, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement remains united in humanity.”
