Imagine if you mailed the IRS a check to pay your taxes, but they left their mail unopened for years and then arrested you for failure to pay taxes. That’s effectively what ICE is doing to increasing numbers of people now; people out of status only because of GOVERNMENT delay.

This is one of the things that I find is most shocking to people outside Minnesota who don’t realize it yet—the scale at which everyone who isn’t white has been forced into a spectrum of hiding. Very good article drawing out the Tahrir Square comparison.
Knutson mentioned in passing that his neighbor had “an adopted brown kid down there; they hid her in the basement yesterday.” This kind of thing no longer sounds weird in Minneapolis. Many people are hiding indoors—so many that, in a city with a substantial minority population, I hardly saw any Black or Latino faces on the street.

Having been around many ICE/CBP career people in my life, this speaks very accurately to me.
Asked about the hunt for volunteers, DHS and Customs and Border Protection did not respond to my request for comment.
"There might be some immature knuckleheads who think they are out there trying to capture Nicolas Maduro, but most field officers see a clear need for deescalation,
" a high level career official at
Homeland Security headquarters in
Washington also told me. "There is genuine fear that indeed ICE's heavy handedness and the rhetoric from Washington is more creating a condition where the officers' lives are in danger rather than the other way around."
