My first book is out this week, The Proof in the Code. Two notes: 1. It's a character-driven story about people who dared to envision a new way of doing mathematics. 2. I can still barely believe the perfect confluence between Lean and our AI moment. www.quantabooks.org/books/the-pr...

Post from Mastodon user @intransitivelie@beige.party:

I regret to inform everyone that my copy of QBittorrent escaped its sandbox last night and downloaded a whole bunch of content owned by major corporations, and then my copy of Jellyfin broke containment and added those unfortunately-downloaded media files to its various libraries. I'm conducting an internal investigation to figure out how this happened, which will involve consuming these media files until the answers become apparent. Thank you for your cooperation during this trying time.

I'm happy to give you all the information you need to reproduce these unfortunate and completely unforeseen errors yourself.

V v good Heated edition on the grassroots fight against big tech's shocking data centre growth It has been astonishing to see people being blase or dismissive about these concerns, writing them off as environmentalism hysterics. This is extremely bad stuff heated.world/p/how-grassr...
That was PEC’s first victory in what is turning out to be a years-long fight for transparency and regulation of the most lucrative industry in the state. In Virginia, many data center projects are being developed in secret, as county officials sign nondisclosure agreements with tech companies that hide everything from company names, building plans, energy needs, and any other information the tech industry deems “proprietary.”

So PEC has tried to shed light. So far, the group has mapped over 330 existing and proposed data centers in the state. The proposed data centers alone will cover 180 million square feet, or the equivalent of 1,000 Walmart Super Centers.

Soon, PEC was receiving calls from people all over the state asking for help with the data centers in their neighborhoods. They brought together nearly 40 organizations, from homeowner associations to the Sierra Club, to form the Virginia Data Center Reform Coalition.
